The 1990s has officially become ‘vintage’. Iconic British designer and Vintage festival organiser, Wayne Hemingway, and the University of Wolverhampton has announced that the early nineties, 1990-1992, can now be classed and viewed as ‘vintage’. This is due to the twenty-year gap needed for full retrospection and evaluation of ‘vintage’ culture.

The nineties is set to make its debut at Hemingway’s renowned cultural festival, Vintage. Celebrating the ‘Best of British’ across music, fashion, art, design, food and film, the festival will incorporate the early nineties with Madchester style raves at the Warehouse, with DJs from the infamous Hacienda era such as Graham Park and Danny Rampling, legendary 90s club nights Sub Club and Back to Basics will be mixing it up side by side.

Pump Up The Volume will be hosting a special 1990s rave and fashion-wise, the Vintage Festival’s huge marketplace of 250 traders will be stocked up with a wide range of 90s garments and accessories– from grunge shirts to DMs, crop tops and peace sign jewellery to Alaia and Romeo Gigli and early John Paul Gaultier.  

From the reprise of bands like Pulp, The Stone Roses and Blur, to Damien Hirst’s exhibition at Tate Modern, right through to the nostalgic catwalk shows at New York and London Fashion Week – the nineties is certainly set to make an impact this summer. The distinct styles are already making their way onto British high streets; from body con bralets to brothel creepers, whilst 90s Commes Des Garcon and Yoji Yamamoto are flying out of vintage stores.

Well placed for the revival is festival masterminds Wayne and Gerardine Hemingway, contributors to the original movement with their iconic fashion label Red or Dead, who showcased their first catwalk show in 1989 and became British Fashion Council’s ‘Street Style’ Designers of the year in 1996, 1997 and 1998 consecutively.

Wayne Hemingway comments: “For me the nineties was a rare and exciting time, the last time that we had an original fashion look born from music; where everyone had an individual style, based on their musical tastes. This idea of ‘Cool Britannia’ where British music, and fashion, was a distinctive voice is very much in line with the nostalgia we are feeling at the moment and it’s great to see it now being classed as Vintage so we can enjoy it all over again!

“The Vintage Festival is a place of discovery – where families and friends can indulge in times gone by and younger generations can uncover them for the first time. Whilst the nineties may feel like not that long ago for some of us, times have certainly changed and it’s refreshing to look back with new eyes to truly enjoy the nineties cultural boom.”

Confirming its place in British cultural heritage, Patricia Dillon, Divisional Leader of Design and Applied Arts at the University of Wolverhampton comments:

"For something to be classed as Vintage it needs to be of sufficient quality of design and creative execution for it to stand the test of time and be relevant and desirable to future discerning generations. The 90s are now officially classified as Vintage because we are two decades on and a new generation is starting to discover and enjoy the creative fruits of musicians, designers, artists and film makers who delivered their ideas 2o years ago.

“Many of the courses in art, design and architecture, culture, film and media at Wolverhampton University attract students who were born in the early 90s.  They have a natural connection to the cultural heritage of that decade.  Looking at the creative output of the years when they were conceived and born means something to them and they invariably are inspired.  Poignantly, 1990 saw the birth of Photoshop and as a consequence design education has never been the same again. The ’90s have now had time to settle in as a productive yet anti-conformist period of experimentation”.

Taking place on the 13th-15th July in the stunning grounds of Boughton House, Northamptonshire, the festival will also curate a special Friday 13th special experience for festival-goers.

Expect the unexpected on this extra special fright night with a ‘Roller Rink of Doom’ hosted by popular club night Feeling Gloomy; a skating session to all your goth favourites. The Vintage cinema will be dusting off it’s hammer horror back catalogue, whilst the hair and beauty teams will be stocked with black lipstick and heating up the crimpers. There may even be some ‘Thrilling’ surprises round the festival grounds. 

Music will be very much in theme too; with 1970s punk heroes The Damned onstage as well as deadrock batcave pioneers Alien Sex Fiend and eyeliner-friendly new pop punk outfit Fearless Vampire Killers. Not forgetting the revival of Birmingham’s much celebrated Zombie Club, bringing along DJ Had to spin some scary sounds and get everyone in the mood.

Lenny Kravitz's 1991 album, Mama Said, has been digitally remastered and expanded for a special Deluxe Edition to be released on June 5th (June 4th outside of North America) by Virgin/EMI.  The 2CD and digital album adds 21 bonus tracks to the album's original line-up, including 15 previously unreleased recordings from Kravitz's personal archive (please see track listing below). 

By 1991, a good part of the world was already under the spell of Lenny Kravitz's psychedelic brand of rock by way of his 1989 debut Let Love Rule.  Now Kravitz was back with a groundbreaking album, Mama Said, a collection that took the listener on a musical journey filled with brutally honest recounts of love, failures, hope, spirituality and acceptance. It notably featured a resounding 7 singles, including several definitive Kravitz classics such as  "Always On The Run" and "It Ain't Over Til It's Over."

Among the Deluxe Edition's previously unreleased recordings are several unfinished songs from the Mama Said album sessions, as well as home demos from late in the Let Love Rule era, which would later be finished for inclusion on Mama Said. Others, including "Riding On The Wings Of My Lord" and "Framed, Lying, Crying," would not be released in any form - until now.  Also included is the previously unreleased "It Ain't Over Til It's Over" remix 12" (sides A and B) and an unissued five-song live EP recorded in Rotterdam during the Mama Said tour.  Official live and studio B-sides are also included, completing the commemorative reissue of this epic classic album.

Due to a damaged vocal cord which Marina became aware of three weeks ago and has suffered from vocal problems since, her doctor has advised her to not to sing until the end of May while she undergoes treatment. The full statement from Marina is below;

“It is with huge regret that I have had to postpone my UK tour dates due to medical advice. I have been experiencing vocal problems for 3 weeks now and consequently today the Doctor has told me that I cannot sing performance length shows while I undergo treatment, or I could cause permanent damage to my vocal chords.

I am distraught as I was so looking forward to seeing you all on The Lonely Hearts Club tour. The good news is that we have managed to reschedule all the dates - except Leeds which is a festival - starting from the 18th June.  I promise that these shows will be the best I have ever performed for you, as hopefully I will be 100% healthy! All existing tickets will be valid for the new dates and I also promise my Leeds Diamonds that I will see them in the Autumn.

As you know, today is the release date for Electra Heart and the people who buy my records and concert tickets mean the world to me. I hope you understand that not being able to play for you in May is very upsetting.

However, together, we will make the rescheduled June Lonely Hearts Club tour unforgettable.

Dance music producer Nick Otronic has been producing electronic 

music since 2007. He lives in Bremen, Germany along with vocalist 

Lara Loft. Nick Otronic produces dance tracks that are very 

melodic and harmonic, which makes his music recognizable. 

Lara is currently studying musical singing at the EUMAC (European 

Musical Academy), she has developed a strong and clear sound in 

her voice which makes it  perfect for dance music. Their song “You

ONCE, THE MUSICIAL OPENS ON BROADWAY AND RECEIVES CRITICAL ACCLAIM

Over 20 years in the making, singer songwriter Glen Hansard will release his first ever solo album, Rhythm and Repose, on Anti- Records June 18. Best known for his work with The Frames, The Swell Season and in the feature film Once, for which he won an Academy Award, Rhythm and Repose is Hansard’s debut solo album and first album of new material since his 2009 release Strict Joy with The Swell Season. In recent months Hansard has been seen in the documentary The Swell Season which has toured the film festival circuit this year, contributed two songs to the blockbuster soundtrack, The Hunger Games, and been active in the promotion of Once, The Musical which successfully opened on Broadway on March 18 to rave reviews, including the New York Times who explains, “what was always wonderful about ‘Once,’ its songs and its staging, has been magnified.” Hansard will support the new record on his European dates. Rhythm and Repose is a result of Hansard’s last year and a half of living in New York City. The album was recorded by Patrick Dillett (David Byrne, Arto Lindsay, Laurie Anderson) and produced by Thomas Bartlett (Doveman, The National, Antony and the Johnsons). The record features the musical talents of Brad Albetta (Martha Wainwright) on bass, Ray Rizzo on drums, Nico Muhly and Rob Moose on strings (Bon Iver, Y Music), David Mansfield on slide guitar (Dylan’s Rolling Thunder Tour), Javier Mas (Leonard Cohen touring band) and half of Bruce Springsteen’s current horn section. Assisting on vocals are Cristin Milioti (Once, The Musical), Sam Amidon, Marketa Irglova and Aida Shahghasemi (Marketa Irglova touring band). 

Hansard is celebrated as the principal songwriter and vocalist/guitarist for the Irish group The Frames, who have established themselves as one of the most influential bands in Ireland. Hansard garnered a reputation as not only an unparalleled front man, but also for his dedicated following and his grounded, real-life songs. Whether he’s busking the streets of Dublin, where he got his start, or at the Hollywood Bowl, Hansard is always earnest and in-the-moment.

Hansard is also one half of the acclaimed duo The Swell Season. In 2007, he and Czech songstress Markéta Irglová took home the Academy Award for Best Original Song for “Falling Slowly” off the Once soundtrack. Hansard and Irglová continued the success of Once with the 2009 release Strict Joy under the namesake of The Swell Season.

South London indie outfit Fractures are set to release their debut single 'Ride' on May 28th through Distiller Records. 

The track, produced by Dave Eringa (Manics/Idlewild), is a dangerously hypnotic melody that displays a feral attitude and aggression that allures the young to rebel and the old to reminisce. 

Lead singer Freddie's intriguing lyrics pronounce imagery so vivid it’s almost stolen from youthful memories; 'the morning sun ain't pretty enough, my words deserve a little more curve'. It's playful but with an intrinsic seriousness that could almost refer to the divine, albeit wrapped up in black skin tight jeans and a baggy sweater with long black unkempt hair.  

Having already been tipped by NME as ones to watch for this year,  the band charged into 2012 at #1 on the Amazing Radio charts with a demo recorded in Freddie's bedroom - a track which went on to spend over two months at the summit and a performance at HMV's hotly tipped Next Big Thing festival.

Recorded by long-term collaborators S*A*M* & Sluggo (Gym Class Heroes, Metro Station), ‘Sunshine State of Mind’ finds the band – frontman Travis Clark, guitarist Hunter Thomsen, bassist Drew Thomsen and drummer Danny Duncan – expanding their musical palette and demonstrating how recent years on the road with the likes of All Time Low and Forever The Sickest Kids have helped them further their own musical identity. “A lot of bands say they get mature with each record, but with this record I feel like we’ve gone the opposite direction in a positive way,” explains Clark.

Growing up on traveller’s sites in and around Dublin, Vocalist, Daniel Jordan, and bassist Brad Kinsella’s through their shared love of classic and modern rock music, have toured Kopek relentlessly. They won the ‘Best Live Act’ at the Global Battle of the Bands, garnering them $100,000 and a world tour. 

In 2009 Dublin based Record, Publishing & Production company ‘Religion Music’ signed the band for both recording and publishing and Kopek went on a nonstop tour of the US in 2011, finally inking them a deal with international label Century Media Records.

The single ‘Love is Dead’ is available in May, genius through and through and featured on the SAW 3D soundtrack. It’s an astonishing feat for a debut single. So the rock world had better be ready to be conquered! 

You can catch the band at this year’s Download festival on the Red Bull Bedroom Jam stage on Sunday.

The band’s debut album, ‘White Collar Lies’, met with high praise when released in the USA last year and will be available across Europe in the Summer of 2012.

"Found My Way” is the first single from Random Sound’s debut album, “The World As We Know It”, which will be released during the summer of 2012. .

Random Sound get their inspiration from the greatest international pop and rock bands, with influences coming from Coldplay, Maroon 5 , and the soaring nordic pop melodies of artists like AHA and Abba.

Athena releases her second album ‘Peeling Apples’, 16th April through Embraceable Records

Athena’s strength is in her fragility, and as her story is revealed on ‘Peeling Apples’ she navigates the most intimate subjects on human nature and relationships with the skill of a classic songwriter. As Jamie Cullum recently noted Athena is “classic with a twist”.

Peeling Apples is Athena’s second album, following her critically acclaimed 2009 debut “Breath With Me”, which drew much praise from many of the UK’s major music press. So said Uncut; "Sparklingly spans the boundaries of music, enhanced by a voice of great emotional resonance” and from the Daily Mail; "Radiating class and oodles of talent... a voice blessed… this rare diamond ought to shine". 

Since then Athena has achieved sold out UK tours, played Glastonbury Festival, had songs covered by other artists and seen her own music synced with TV programmes, commercials and movies. All the while building a sizeable following with the sort of word of mouth that can only come from connecting directly with the emotional heart of your audience.

Now there is a new album, ‘Peeling Apples’ and co-writers on the record include Richard Causon (Ryan Adams, Ethan Johns, The Kings of Leon, Rufus Wainwright), and Jamie Hartman (Joss Stone, Anastacia) who features on a duet. The songs from her album have the same sort of clear artistic vision that marks out Norah Jones or Tori Amos or Bjork with a fresh, limitless ambition.

Perhaps the most poignant song on her new album is ‘Finding England’, set in London, and beautifully talks of letting go of expectation.‘I’ll Never Know’ tackles the sweet pain of a temptation resisted, that endless battle between head and heart. Then there’s ‘Little Jane’, a message of hope and strength to a girl spotted through a window playing in a field as well as being a supportive word sent back through time to Athena herself as a child. Stay innocent, it says, stay brave. Most of all stay happy.

This then is the sort of artist that understands how a great album is a story, it must have a shape and a sense of momentum to it, it can’t exist in a vacuum. Athena’s skill is in writing epic songs and still maintaining a feeling of intimacy. She expresses a love for Mumford & Sons, Ani Di Franco and PJ Harvey.

“I like to see people doing things their way” she says. “I remember hearing Blowing In The Wind at 14 and thinking, this is what I want to do with my life.”

Short Bio:

Born in London to Greek parents, Athena and grew up in a house that reverberated with traditional Greek folk and classical music, as well as the more straightforward pleasures of The Beatles and Pink Floyd. But despite her musical abode, young Athena was denied a piano until she was 16. When informing her parents she wanted to dedicate her life to music her father insisted she study business so she headed to Bath University but continued making music whilst studying.

“I was very unhappy though,” she says. “I didn’t see the point in living without doing what I loved full time.”

As part of the course Athena studied in New York for six months. While there she auditioned for a teacher from the elite Juilliard School of Performing Arts who spotted her talent and took Athena on as a private student; within days they were developing an intense vocal training programme, as Athena was self-taught up to that point. Upon graduating with a First Class Degree in Business, she told her parents, quite directly, she would be doing music full time and she enrolled on a music course at Trinity College.
