Daft Punk star: 'Someone once ran up a huge bar tab pretending to be me'

Thomas Bangalter, one half of French electro-duo Daft Punk, has revealed that someone once ran up a very expensive bar tab using his name because he wears a robot helmet for his music career so can go unnoticed.

During an interview with the Rolling Stone, the 'Get Lucky' hitmaker admitted it was rather entertaining to hear that a member of public had the guts to do such a thing:

"One thing I like about the masks is that I don't have people constantly coming up to me and reminding me what I do. It's nice to be able to forget, but there are occasional downsides. Several years ago in Ibiza some guy ran up exorbitant bar tabs at clubs while claiming to be me."

In the same interview, the pair also discussed their sci-fi anonymity and confessed that they went with the robot heads because "robots are exciting to people":

"We're interested in the line between fiction and reality, creating these fictional personas that exist in real life. Kraftwerk and Ziggy Stardust and Kiss; people thought the helmets were marketing or something, but for us it was sci-fi glam. We're not performers, we're not models – it would not be enjoyable for humanity to see our features, but the robots are exciting to people."

Daft Punk on helmets: "It's sci-fi glam"

Daft Punk have denied their use of helmets is a "marketing" ploy.

The French dance duo regularly wear robot style helmets when live or in photoshoots.

Speaking to Rolling Stone, Thomas Bangalter said that the group wants to blur the boundaries between real life and fantasy by wearing the helmets. He said:

"We're interested in the line between fiction and reality, creating these fictional personas that exist in real life. Kraftwerk and Ziggy Stardust and Kiss; people thought the helmets were marketing or something, but for us it was sci-fi glam."

Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo added: "We're not performers, we're not models – it would not be enjoyable for humanity to see our features, but the robots are exciting to people."

Daft Punk released their fourth studio album 'Random Access Memories' in the UK on Monday (May 20) and it is expected to be a huge success in the charts.
