The red-haired Florence + The Machine songstress opened up about the difference between her life on the stage and as an ordinary member of society, and explained that now she's experienced an "intense connection with a few thousand people" on stage she finds it difficult to recreate the feeling one to one:

"'Singing is the only time I truly feel happy. You have that intense connection with a few thousand people and it feels real. Then you come back off tour and its hard to have that intense connection to someone one to one."

"'I wonder if having a connection with that many people makes it impossible to have a meaningful connection alone with one person?''

Welch also admitted to Q magazine that once she's finished a live set and returns to the emptiness of a hotel room she becomes deeply "sad":

"This job is not making me sad, it is the situation I'm in is making me sad. The people, the places, the shows, I love all of that. It's just those quiet moments in the hotel room where everything just goes.''

Speaking to BBC's Radio 1, flame-haired Welch explained that she struggles to control herself on stage because she knows she could do something unexpected to shock and entertain the viewing public:

"Because it's live TV, I always get those weird impulses like when you are standing too close to the edge of the (London) Tube platform. Having that sort of power, like, 'I could do something really weird on live telly'. But I never do.

"Why doesn't it happen more? Like, people just wigging (freaking) out. Playing the hurdy gurdy (instrument) or something. I might do star jumps."

Tweeting to her fans yesterday about her upcoming performance at tonight's (February 21) BRIT Awards, Welch wrote:

"Super excited for tmrw, rehearsals going really well! Haven't persuaded the band to do a dance routine yet, working on it!"

In a new interview with The Independent newspaper, the 'Shake It Out' beauty explained that she has big plans for the event, which will take place at London's O2 Arena on February 21, and is "prone to excess" so her fans can expect something visually stunning:

"For me as a maximalist who's really prone to excess, that stuff is what excites me – like Lady Gaga's performances. But then you get Adele and it's that sense of being really zoomed in on someone and you're as close to them as we are now."

"It always feels to me that the Brits is a great British musical. It felt like that the last time we performed – everyone's running around backstage, half-dressed. Gaga's going in one room, Dizzee's in another, Lily [Allen] is coming out of that one, and there was me in some funny brocade dressing gown, barefoot, chatting to everyone. It does have that sense of a celebration. I guess I think about it in that way to help myself process it. I understand musicals."

Florence + the Machine have been nominated in 2 categories at this year's BRITs - Best Female and Best Album - and Welch revealed that while it would be an honour to win she will simply enjoy the atmosphere of the ceremony as a guest:

"I mean, it would be nice to win. But I'm not gonna put pressure on myself to win; that would spoil it for me. I'm just really looking forward to going, enjoying being there, seeing everyone, and getting a bit drunk."
