Geri Halliwell on 'Viva Forever!' closing: 'It's not a s**t musical'

Pop star Geri Halliwell has opened up about her disappointment at the forthcoming end of the Spice Girls musical, 'Viva Forever!'.

The production only launched back in December last year, but ticket sales haven't been as promising as initially hoped so the show will come to a close on June 29 with one final performance.

Writing on her official blog today (May 22), the 'Wannabe' hitmaker explained that she doesn't understand why the musical wasn't as popular as predicted because she thinks it is fantastic: "Over 4 years ago it started with a conversation in a Kitchen; Laughing… Joking… full of promise, dreams & optimism."

"We managed to get one of the most successful Theatre producers to do our show! A great writer, our Spice music… I felt confident - almost cocky it was going to be a huge success."

Questioning the production, she continued: "What went wrong? Was I biased? Blinded because it was a show with our music? Was it the lighting? The set? The choreography? The press? The story? It had a bumpy start but the cast and director worked really hard, made great changes, and I can hand on heart tell it's not s**t! - It’s good entertainment!"

Halliwell added that she is now heading down under to be a judge on 'Australia's Got Talent' and thanked everyone who participated in 'Viva Forever!' for such an amazing experience: "I don’t regret it. I got to meet and work with the fabulous Judy Craymer, the producer whom I hope to be a friend for life."

"So this is to say thank you to all the people who tried for the Spice Girls, who had the guts to put their heart and soul into Viva. Even if something doesn't work, I admire anyone who tries, because a lot of people are afraid to. Thanks to all the cast of Viva, the musicians, Judy, Jennifer, the Spices and to all the fans and theatre-goers who came."

Teni Set To Release New Single ‘Afrodisiac’

Taken from her highly anticipated debut album, title track ‘Afrodisiac’ is the stunning new single from British born jazz singer and composer Teni.

Continuing in the traditions of Fela Kuti, Teni is now carrying the flame for feminine afrobeat. Described as ‘afrosoul’, Teni’s music combines rhythms and melodies born in Africa with influences as wide as the legendary jazz singers Nina Simone and Billie Holiday, to Bob Marley, Kate Bush and Marvin Gaye. Developing her unique sound in the UK, Teni refined it through her ten years spent living in Nigeria. Tapping into the spirit of Fela’s birthplace, Teni discovered much more inspirational African music and got to perform on occasion with Seun Kuti and Egypt 80’. Elsewhere, whilst in Nigeria, Teni worked as a fashion designer and helped build an ethical design house named the ‘House of Makeda’. Her message of African unity and development is rooted in her first-hand experiences and prestigious education from UCL and the School of Oriental and African Studies.

Despite her parents’ advice, Teni launched full-throttle into the making of her debut album. The sensational lead single ‘Afrodisiac’ perfectly showcases Teni’s distinct and developed sound. Opening with cool rhythms and 70’s inspired, funky guitar melodies, Teni’s sultry vocals soon take centre stage. An underpinning of synthesisers and bass guitar helps bring the vocals and catchy horn sections to the foreground. Evoking similarities with 90’s singer Sade and jazz great Sarah Vaughn, the song also hints at James Brown with the funk feel that is present. Certainly, ‘afrosoul’ is a fitting description for Teni’s music.

With the song already receiving backing from BBC Introducing, NME and Tony Allen (afrobeat drummer and Damon Albarn collaborator), much anticipation will be surrounding this release. Teni is surely set for a bright future with her album release only round the corner.

‘Afrodisiac’ is out February 11th.

Bob Hillary and The Massive Mellow To Release New Album ‘Love’

Recorded in a variety of settings around the globe, including India, Amsterdam and Scotland, ‘Love’ similarly takes in a number of musical influences to produce something special.

Tapping into the current environmental and astrological situations, Bob Hillary and The Massive Mellow spread their message of hope and positivity through the record. Being a lifelong farmer and green supporter himself, Hillary – a relative of legendary explorer Sir Edmund Hillary - understands the environmental changes first-hand and this forms one of the key messages behind the album. Tracks such as ‘How Will I Survive’ and the sensational lead single ‘The Earth Song’ transmit this impeccably. Not only do the poignant lyrics put this across, but the music itself conveys a positive call to humanity to act. Since his early days in a band with Chris Martin (Coldplay), Hillary’s songwriting talents have clearly flourished.

Building upon their debut album ‘Nature’s Pace’, ‘Love’ is a laidback yet powerful creation. Collaborating with fellow singer-songwriter Carrie Tree on a number of tracks, including opener ‘How Will I Survive’, acoustic guitar and delicate, intertwining vocals are often central to the music. Surrounding this basis, combinations of slide and electric guitar, horns, organs and creative beats generate the bands unique sound. A dose of dub is also apparent throughout. The aforementioned single, ‘The Earth Song’, as well as tracks such as ‘I Feel Love Dub’ and ‘Movin’ showcase this excellently. Elsewhere, the twelve song collection seamlessly moves between folk, soul, blues and reggae elements. Notable tracks ‘Gently Does It’ and ‘Little Do They Know’ really highlight the melodic capacities of the group. ‘Love’ is truly a rich and rewarding listen.

Evoking comparisons with artists such as Jack Johnson, Ben Harper and Fat Freddy’s Drop, Bob Hillary and The Massive Mellow are set for big things. The release of ‘Love’ and new single ‘The Earth Song’ will certainly turn heads towards this burgeoning group.

‘reminiscent of Paul Simon... with some dub influences and a world music sensibility’ - Kindred Spirit Magazine

‘Love’ will be released on February 4th and is preceded by lead single ‘The Earth Song’.

Juliet Lawson Returns With The EP ‘Songs From The Suitcase...'

Having released her first album ‘Boo’ back in 1972, Lawson’s career in the music industry has been eventful to say the least. Seen as a British version of Joni Mitchell in the early days of her career, Lawson promised much and was predicted to be one of the ‘Superstars of 74’’ (Record Mirror), along with Linda Ronstadt and Cockney Rebel. Despite the positive reviews and praise Lawson received for ‘Boo’, this never transmitted into wide-scale success for a variety of outside factors. However, her dedicated cult following has been sustained throughout her career, which has seen her independently release two subsequent LP’s, ‘The One That Got Away’ and ‘Where I’m Coming From’, as well as a ‘best of’ entitled ‘Closer’.

Listening to ‘Songs From The Suitcase...’ it is apparent that Lawson’s talents are clearer than ever. Wielding the abilities of an experienced and talented songwriter, Lawson moves seamlessly between blues, jazz, folk and soul. Record opener, ‘The Skin You’re In’, begins with deft blues guitar, cool rhythms and an intelligent use of violin. Lawson’s delicate and calming voice works perfectly in the piece, whilst simultaneously adding subtle piano chords. ‘Melancholy Blue’ is more of a jazz ballad, utilising soft percussion, piano and melodic clarinet. The musicianship and restraint of Lawson is impeccable. Elsewhere, ‘Waste of a Woman’ is a wistful, more upbeat piece with a hint of Eastern Europe, whilst ‘A Woman Passer By On The Street’ is a melodically rich, slow and rather beautiful piece.

Writing some of her strongest material since ‘Boo’, Juliet Lawson has proved her capacities at writing timeless classics. Her varied influences and musical career have merely added to her unique, refined sound. ‘Songs From The Suitcase...’ is truly a work which must not be overlooked.

Kenni Wenna Record Deal Takes 15 Years to Seal

As a busker in the mid-90’s, Kenni was spotted by an independent Manchester record label who were quick to offer him the chance to record a demo. His intelligent blend of diverse musical elements, as well as his soulful vocals, drew the label to him. Unfortunately, the label hit financial problems soon after and Kenni was thrust back into his normal life. Some 15 years later, as fate would have it, the previous label owners found Kenni’s demo in their garage and were encouraged to get in touch with him. Finding an address for the songwriter, the people immediately sent a letter. Kenni, who by this time was unemployed, had hit upon hard times and was facing imminent eviction. With the bailiffs on his case, Kenni was only returning to his house on the odd occasion but luckily managed to pick up the letter. Fast forward to now and Kenni has secured a record deal worth £250k, which is being released through inspired label, The Wenna Project.

The resulting record, Real Lite, is an incredible achievement. Upon listening to the album, Kenni’s varied influences, which include the likes of Bob Marley, Fela Kuti, James Brown and Bob Dylan, all show through at certain points. Tracks such as ‘Lose Your Illusions’ and lead single ‘Real Lite’ highlight Kenni’s soulful side, with his heartfelt vocals and emotive chord sequences. Elsewhere, Wenna’s upbeat side is emphasised, particularly in the songs ‘Underground’ and ‘Tek No Prizna’. With reggae providing the basis for the album, Wenna seamlessly introduces other elements from country and blues to pop, providing the album with further depth. Together with its almost mythical back-story, Real Lite is a must listen for all music fans.

Former X Factor starlet Amelia Lily has shot straight into the midweek charts at No.1 with her debut single, 'You Bring Me Joy'.

The new positions were confirmed this afternoon (September 12) and saw the platinum-haired singer make an appearance at the top spot, knocking Ne-Yo's 'Let Me Love You' down 2 places to No.3.

Speaking to The Official Charts Company about her new single, Lily said: "It’s still quite hard to believe that I came third in the final of one of the biggest television shows going. Now, nearly a year later, I’m releasing my first single! I’d be ecstatic if it got to Number 1, but at the same time, I’d be really proud wherever ever it charts because I’ve worked so hard on it."

The Script are this week's highest non-movers at No.2 with their Will.i.Am collaboration, 'Hall of Fame', Little Mix have remained at No.4 with their new offering 'Wings', and Taylor Swift's break-up anthem 'We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together' has climbed to No.7.

Elsewhere in the Top 40, Tulisa's 'Live It Up' is a new entry at 10, The Killers have debuted at 15 with 'Runaways', and Justin Bieber's 'As Long As You Love Me' has fallen 8 places to No.34.

Rebecca Ferguson has "never felt better" as she is sued by former management

Rebecca Ferguson has issued a long statement on Twitter as news breaks that she is to be sued by her former management company.

The X Factor 2010 runner-up turned heads in the summer after splitting from Modest Management and calling them "vile" due to making her work too hard.

She took to Twitter yesterday (September 11) to state that she was "not well" for a long time and that fame has often been a negative for her. Ferguson said:

"I have read the article and i am aware that it will be in the press this week ... to my fans all i want to say is i am happy i am well and i am focused on work .. for a long time i was not well but now i have never felt better and i am looking forward to all the amazing things i have coming up this year."

She continued: "All i want to do is make music and write music ..when you come to fame everybody want a piece of you, your making money you've never made before and you have attention you have never had before ..i"m just a girl that has come from absolutely nothing."

It has now been revealed that her former management company is suing her for breach of contract, believing that she unlawfully terminated her five-year deal.

There appeared to be disagreement over the wording of the termination and Modest are seeking 20% of her future earnings for the remainder of her original contract period.
