Pitbull: “JLo is a walking empire”

Rapper Pitbull has praised his often-collaborator Jennifer Lopez, calling her “a walking empire”.

Speaking to Reuters, the ‘I Know You Want Me’ star opened up about his heritage, his projects and his collaborations. In particular, he talked about working with Jennifer Lopez, with whom he has three duets: ‘On The Floor’, ‘Dance Again’ and the latest tune ‘Live It Up’.

“Jennifer is a hard worker, very professional, gorgeous and she’s a walking empire,” he said. “Anytime I’m around her, I’m watching, learning, studying. It’s a natural combination, like a student and teacher. I’m a student all day. I think it would be an honor for Jennifer to watch me grow and say, ‘That kid did learn.’”

In the interview, Pitbull also talked about the origin behind his moniker. His namesake dog, he claims, is “misunderstood”.

“Pitbulls are misunderstood and that’s the same thing with me when I first came into the music business. Being Cuban-American made me politically incorrect,” he added. “My whole life was trying to make people understand that we all come from the same place. It’s the same with the dog. The pitbull is a very loyal, very loving dog that doesn’t understand the concept of losing. I believe in fighting hard for what you believe in and never giving up.”

'Spring Breakers' actress Selena Gomez has addressed the recent controversy surrounding her career choices and revealed that after being associated with Disney for so long, she just wanted to do something "creative and artsy".

Speaking to Radio 1's Nick Grimshaw earlier today (May 22), the 'Come & Get It' beauty explained that she's now trying to focus on the things that she enjoys, rather than playing it safe and doing what people would expect her to:

"I was aching for something that would be creative and artsy... I get that it's started a little bit of controversy which is understandable but at the end of a day it's a character. The bigger you get the more people are going to try and bring you down... I'm just trying to do what makes me happy."

Referring to the R-rated 'Spring Breakers', in which she played a college girl who robbed a restaurant in order to fund a girls' vacation, Gomez added: "You know [it was] really different for me. I wish all my movies were like that."

Miguel kicks fan in head after ill-timed stage leap at Billboard Awards

Miguel has opened up on a dramatic stage incident at the Billboard Music Awards last night (May 19) in which he accidentally landed on two fans.

The singer was performing at the Las Vegas event when he decided to jump over the crowd onto another part of the stage.

However, it didn't go to plan and one of his feet kicked a female fan in the head, whilst another member of the audience's arm was hit.

Miguel was left sprawled out on the stage as he sang the song, with the audience looking on in bemusement and shock.

Speaking to Billboard about the incident, the singer revealed that he apologised for the accident and has since become friends with one of victims. Standing alongside the fan, he said:

"Well, I think it's kind of clear what happened. But I'm very happy to bring my new friend, Khyati, we just met. Unfortunately we did not meet under the best circumstances, but I think we're Ok. The crazy thing is, when you're performing and you're just kind of into it, you never know where it's gonna go and where you're gonna go with it, and how that might turn out. So this is one of the less favourable moments. [I] got caught up in the moment, thank goodness Khyati is Ok."

Justin Bieber was seemingly booed during an acceptance speech at last night's (May 19) Billboard Music Awards.

As previously reported, the singer won three awards at the Las Vegas ceremony - Top Male Artist, Top Social Artist and Milestone.

When he collected the latter gong, he asked for people to concentrate on his music and not the other "bullsh*t". The 'Believe' star said:

"I'm 19 years old. I think I'm doing a pretty good job. From my heart, I really just want to say, it should really be about the music, it should be about the craft that I'm making. This is not a gimmick. I'm an artist, and I should be taken seriously, and all this other bullsh*t should not be spoken of."

However, it appears that the singer was booed by some sections of the crowd as he asked to be taken seriously.

Bieber seemed largely nonplussed after the event, tweeting: "Grateful to my #Beliebers. Our awards. Love u. I love music, my fans, my family, my friends..And I love The Lord."

Rap sensation Macklemore has explained that while his chart success was very sudden, he has been working hard to make a name for himself in the music world since he was just a kid.

During a revealing interview with Billboard for the new issue's cover story, the 'Thrift Shop' hitmaker confessed that he was taking part in street rap battles when he was a youngster to try and gain respect from those already in the game: "This was pre-Internet as a way to get your music out. So I had to do shows, but I was too young. Freestyling on the street or in the park was where I honed the craft."

He went on to unveil his dark past, talking about how he often preferred drugs to school: "It was pre-gentrification of Seattle's Central District. And I wasn't going to class and I was doing a bunch of drugs and drinking. So my parents put me in a predominantly white school in the North End and then I did a program called Running Start, which was like a community college. I never got a chance to climb any kind of social ladder anywhere. I was more into making music-and doing hallucinogenic mushroom voyages."

Discussing his recovery, Macklemore (pictured below with Ryan Lewis) added that while he's clean now he still struggles with 'overindulging': "I tend to be an overindulger in general. Like I've just eaten two bags of chips and I had a shitload of candy from a gas station last night."

"I don't have moderation in my life. I really have to work on it. So with drugs and alcohol, I had no moderation. Smoking weed and drinking hindered my creative process. They were the veil over my eyes. It never really worked for me, in terms of being prolific."

Hitmaker Will.i.Am has opened up about working with Britney Spears on her highly anticipated new album and revealed that he approached it in a way he has never tried before.

Speaking to Billboard about being executive producer of the exciting project, he explained that taking a personal interest was important and he spent a lot of time getting to know Spears on a one-to-one level outside of her music career:

"We start (recording) next week. Before we even start we've had these juicy sessions, where we've been bonding, building the trust and comfort. I've never worked like this before – not even the Peas. I wanted to just go to lunch for two months, which is totally different from how you typically do it."

"I said, 'Let's talk about what you're excited about. Let's talk about things you've done in you career, what you're happy about. Let's talk about spending time with your kids, let's talk about your breakup. Let's talk about how now you're single, how independent you might feel.' We started talking about all that stuff. So I said, 'do you mind if I write this down? I don't mean to impose but I want to interview you. I need this to create a filter.'"

He admitted that by getting to know who she truly is, he will be able to make her new collection of songs fit her personality and experiences, which will make for a fantastic listening experience: "When people start bringing us stuff, I can say 'Actually we can't have this song. Yes, we want dance songs but that's a little too dark.'"

"I want it to fit with the emotions. I'm really excited about that and honored that she trusts me. I don't want to let her down. I just want to do it the way a brand would do it. They wouldn't say, 'Take this. Put it out.' That's not what you would do. You'd come up with a mood board, the logos, the font, all the other stuff."

Daft Punk: 'We didn't use computers to make our new album'

French electro-duo Daft Punk have revealed that while a lot of people may expect them to have used laptops for their new album, 'Random Access Memories', they decided against them because they couldn't express what they wanted to using computers.

During an interview with Billboard, the 'Get Lucky' stars explained that it's becoming more common for EDM producers to rely on technology to produce sounds, but after trying to get a desirable result from machines for their own new offering it soon became clear they weren't going to achieve what they were aiming for:

"We really felt that the computers are not really music instruments, and we were not able to express ourselves using a laptop. We tried, but were not successful. It’s not really a judgment or criticism of any of the music today; rather trying to bring a different point of view and different alternative."

Referring to how music is made today, Daft Punk added: "The problem with the way to make music today, these are turnkey systems; they come with preset banks and sounds. They’re not inviting you to challenge the systems themselves, or giving you the ability to showcase your personality, individuality. They’re making it as if it’s somehow easier to make the same music you hear on the radio. Then it creates a very vicious cycle: How can you challenge that when the system and the media are not challenging it in the first place?"

'American Idol' star Scotty McCreery learning to balance career with university

Country sensation Scotty McCreery, who found fame as the winner of 2011's 'American Idol', has revealed that he's currently balancing school with a successful music career.

The 19-year-old, who enjoyed a No.1 with his debut album, told Billboard.com that he is currently studying for a degree at North Carolina State University while travelling around on tour in support of his forthcoming new album:

"I have school Monday through Wednesday and we hit the touring circuit Thursday through Sunday."

Speaking about his new record, McCreery added that he is particularly excited to release it because he has been penning some of the tracks himself:

“We’re in the studio right now and we’ve got about 12 songs cut. That’s the one I’m really excited about because I had a hand in writing it. That is one of those things I didn’t have a chance to do on the first record because coming off Idol as the winner, you have a deadline for the first record. We were on the Idol tour as well so we were trying to squeeze it all in."
