Carrie Underwood on fame: 'I used to have panic attacks at the start of my career'

Country songstress Carrie Underwood has revealed that at the beginning of her career she suffered from panic attacks because she couldn't get used to the constant and overwhelming attention.

Speaking in the June edition of Marie Claire magazine, the 'Blown Away' hitmaker explained that when she first rose to fame she was made to feel very nervous by the swarms of people that would surround her:

"At the beginning of my career, I used to have panic attacks. People were touching me, screaming -- it made me really nervous. In public, I just get nervous."

"It’s a physical reaction, feeling like the walls are closing in. The fans are great. It’s not their fault. I don’t ever want to come across as ungrateful. But on my end, it is hard for me to process. Because I am still just me."

She also opened up about her childhood and family life, admitting that she was never very close to her siblings as they were significantly older than her: "I'm not a mushy person at all. We were never a huggy family. Or a ''let's talk it out'' family. Technically I have siblings but they are quite a bit older than me -- I was the accident -- so I have the only-child syndrome going on."

"I'm a little more selfish, a little more independent, a little closed. I do wish I were softer. I wish I were able to form relationships better. But hey, I mean...I'm not a sociopath."

Carrie Underwood on possibility of working with One Direction: "You never know"

Carrie Underwood hasn't ruled out the possibility of working with One Direction in the future.

The country star's sound isn't wholly similar to the 'Kiss You' lads' mainstream pop styling, but it seems there might be a mutual respect between the pair.

Speaking to ITN News, US star Underwood said that whilst she isn't too familiar with the boys themselves, they are all over American media. She said:

"I don't know that much about them personally, but we see so much about them in the US - where they are and what they eat for lunch. Young ladies always find young men to love, I think that's what it's all about."

When asked about a potential collaboration, the country icon said:

"I don't know. I never have the opportunity to meet them, but you never know, if we all cross paths at one point or another."

Carrie Underwood speaks out in favour of gay marriage

Carrie Underwood has spoken out in favour of gay marriage, declaring that ‘we should all have the right to love publicly the people we want to love.’

The winner of the fourth season of American Idol, who has frequently discussed her faith and religion in her songs, revealed her liberal attitude to same-sex marriage in a frank interview with The Independent.

She said: "As a married person myself, I don't know what it's like to be told I can't marry somebody I love, and want to marry.

“I can't imagine how that must feel. I definitely think we should all have the right to love, and love publicly, the people that we want to love."

The 29-year-old, whose new album, ‘Blown Away,’ knocked Adele’s 21 off the top of the Billboard charts, also claimed that the non-denominational congregation she belongs to is just as open to the idea:

"Our church is gay friendly. Above all, God wanted us to love others. It's not about setting rules, or [saying] 'everyone has to be like me'.

“No. We're all different. That's what makes us special. We have to love each other and get on with each other. It's not up to me to judge anybody."
