Lola's Bad 'Miss Abyss 2046 EP' Release Monday 3rd June 2013

Lola’s Bad

EP Title: Miss Abyss 2046

Release Date: 3rd June

Black Fantasy records

“Bewitching delivery that pivots uneasily somewhere between Grace Jones and Fever Ray”

God Is In The TV

“A decadent, luxurious critique of self-indulgent contemporary pop” Notion

“The Knife meets Cocteau Twins. Uncomfortable and shady whilst also being distinctly impressive in its nonconformist nature” The Sound Of Confusion

On June 3rd, Greek-born/London-based Evangelia C aka Lola’s Bad will release her debut EP ‘Miss Abyss 2046’, which introduces a ferocious femininity to the dream pop genre. Like Diamanda Galas before her, Evangelia sets one foot in the future and another in the past, bringing classical theatrics to postmodern forms. Her unique contribution, however, is to draw on the traditions of both the Greek Archipelago and the British Isles, resulting in a Mediterranean-Celtic aesthetic that is as harsh as it is ethereal.

This cavalcade of influences is directed down its pathway of performance-art-video-pop by what Evangelia describes as a ‘hidden sensual surrealist touch’, which underpins her every mode of expression. Opposed to the avant-garde’s tendency towards introversion and self-indulgence, Evangelia engages with her audience so that she may pervert as well as entertain.

‘Corona Wide’ opens the EP dramatically with the essence of a ritualistic chant. Heavy percussive beats, the trademark layered vocals and a haunting backdrop of electronic strings harken back to the Amazons of Greek Mythology. ‘Kissing The Night’ is unconventional, abrasive electro with oriental undertones, while ‘Cyber Censation’ is a glitching cascade of eerie electronica. Providing a cathartic end to the record, ‘Pray’ and ‘Dream Brother’ transfix the listener with a dense/celestial diptych that encapsulates the EP's sound.

Evangelia’s live performances are equally as intriguing as her recordings and serve as both canvas and catalyst for the music to take shape – her experience as a professional dancer, actress and video artist puts her on a whole new level when it comes to the composition and execution of the Lola’s Bad show, which is more like a living installation or live experiment than a typical ‘concert’.

In addition to appearances at the Biennale and the Deathtripping festival (with Lydia Lunch), this graduate of Central St Martin’s Performance Art programme has written, directed and starred in a sold-out theatre adaptation of David Lynch's 'Fire Walk With Me' staged in an illegal Athens nightclub, performed a 90-minute monologue as Andy Warhol at the Cochrane Theatre in London, and played a cannibal feeding raw meat to audience members who had been strapped to a table in the legendary Shunt space. It should come as no surprise that such a dynamic and driven artist now writes and produces the entire Lola's Bad concept and content with just one collaborator, Bat Halliday.

2.Cyber Censation

Having collaborated and toured with indie strangelings of Montreal, Regina Spektor and Sondre Lerche, singer, violinist and composer K Ishibashi (aka Kishi Bashi) has embarked on an epic solo project.

Already picking up play on Radio 1 and BBC 6Music, for “It All Began With A Burst” - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-JqDgrnaMC4 - (a song which soundtracked a recent Sony advert), Kishi Bashi’s debut full-length, 151a, finally gets a UK release on May 6th 2013 via Joyful Noise Recordings. Twitmusic will be streaming the album on their homepage from April 28th – May 6th via Kishi Bashi’s twitter @kishi-bashi.

A literal translation of the numbers 151 and single letter ‘a’ in Japanese, ‘ichi go ichi e,’ is a homophone of a phrase meaning, roughly, “enjoy every encounter for it may never come again.” This follow-up to his summer 2011 Room For Dream EP, is a bright and soaring avant-pop record primarily written on violin.

Produced and played entirely by Kishi Bashi, the lead track “Intro/Pathos, Pathos” is a soaring yet concise amalgam of what is to come. The record unfolds with the deconstructed doo-wop of “Wonder Woman, Wonder Me”, a 21st Century transmission of Smile-era Brian Wilson and continues with the menacing marriage of Eastern hues and Western operatics in “Beat the Bright out of Me”. This album is mediation between opposing drives, offering possible reconciliation but never promising it. The bouncy, infectious "Bright Whites" is one of those perfect pop songs that will just implant itself in the back of your head. In fact, you may have already gotten the bug: It's featured in Microsoft's Windows 8 ad campaign.

Kishi Bashi has just finished a sold out headline North American tour, and will be playing festivals throughout the spring and summer.

Einaudi’s hauntingly beautiful and evocative music has sold over 1.5 million records and has quietly made him one of the most successful musicians in the world. He has provided music for more than 20 films including Shane Meadows’ ‘This Is England’ film and the TV sequel ‘This Is England ‘86’, as well as Darren Aronovsky’s ‘Black Swan’ and the French International hit ‘Untouchable’. In 2011 Radio 1 DJ Greg James led a successful campaign to get Einaudi’s piece ‘I Giorni’ into the Top 40 of the Official Singles Charts and Professor Green sampled Einaudi on his hit single ‘Astronaut’. In 2012 he performed at the BT River Of Music that coincided with the Olympics and in October he performed his score for ‘This Is England’ live at a screening of the film at the London Film Festival.

His music has been described as minimalist, alt-classical, ambient and contemporary, but it defies easy classification. He sums it up best: “There is something in it that comes from classical, but I have influences from different music I have experienced in my life, from African music to folk and rock.”

Ludovico Einaudi was born in Turin and trained as a classical composer and pianist at the Milan Conservatorio. He studied under Luciano Berio, one of the most important composers of the twentieth century avant-garde. After some early prestigious commissions in the classical world Einaudi turned his back on what he regarded as an essentially conservative approach to music to embrace his own enthusiasms, which included African music, folk and the rock music of the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, U2 and Radiohead.

He has released 11 studio albums: Time Out (’88), Stanze (’92), Salgari (’95), Le Onde (’96), Eden Roc (’99), I Giorni (’01), Una Mattina (’04), Diario Mali [with Ballaké Sissoko] (’05), Divenire (’06), Cloudland [recorded as the group Whitetree] (’09), and Nightbook (’09) and three live albums recorded at La Scala (’03), in Berlin (’08) and at the Royal Albert Hall (’10).

CHEVALIER AVANT GARDE // Out today: 'Heterotopias' album (11th June) on DeBonton Records

"There exists another pop, a pop of the street level in this metaphorical city. A pop with a lineage in bedrooms. We love this Pop." 20jazzfunkgreats
"Chevalier Avant Garde deliver the utmost serious retro-futurist pop, edgy for reminding us we’re constantly nearing the advent of robot lust and digital mal de vivre" Weird Canada

To celebrate the release of the bands 'Heterotopia' LP, Brooklyn based house and techno producer, Octo Octa remixes album track 'Haircut'.

Chevalier Avant Garde is Dimitri and Filip, a Montreal-based duo of European expats who share a love of low-light shadows and ancient ruins. Dimitri, of Greek-Egyptian descent, spent his dysfunctional childhood on the island of Crete riding his Kawasaki around the beach of a NATO base. His dad, a sailor, introduced him to adult contemporary Cretan music, but Dimitri always preferred Whitney Houston and the Byzantine liturgy. Not too much is known about Filip except that he grew up in the Polish industrial city of Lodz where he worked as a ball boy for the LKS Lodz sports club. In his downtime he watched Eurovision reruns with his aunt.

Upon meeting each other in Montreal, Dimitri and Filip discovered their mutual affinity for aged mustards, pickles and Asiago cheese. They've been sharing groceries ever since. Between bouts of drinking and listening to mix CDs on the sound system of Dimitri's 2005 Suzuki, 'Heterotopias' was conceived. The LP takes its title from the Foucaultian concept of "alternative spaces", areas existing only between "here" and "there". These are simultaneously illusory and real, familiar yet foreign, like a telephone call or a déjà vu. Heterotopias' 10 songs evolve from one such indeterminate juncture, a place where idealized declarations of love meet droning, dispassionate beats to convey both overt sentimentality and overwhelming apathy.

The album was released earlier this year in US/Canada on Skrot Up Records and is having its French release 11th June on deBonton Records.

Tracklisting:
1. Over the Fountain
2. New Face
3. Axion
4. Enemy
5. Young
6. Nie Rozumiem
7. Haicut
8. Red Sea
9. Loss
10. What's Your Number Girl?
