Once famously described as ‘licentious, festering reprobates’ and ‘leprous anti-establishment scumbags’ and banned from playing in their home country, it’s difficult to overestimate the shock and awe The Boomtown Rats inspired in late 70s Ireland.  The Rats set out to “disrupt, disturb and question what it meant to be young in the Ireland of the mid-70s”. 

Formed in 1975 in Dublin The Boomtown Rats exploded out of Ireland in ’76 and their fast, loud, furious music and their fast loud furious attitude meant they became part of the burgeoning punk scene. Singer Bob Geldof’s defiant motormouth arrogance and flagrant disrespect for authority endeared him and his band to every youth who felt weighed down by the heavy handed blandishments of church and state.  In the UK The Boomtown Rats first toured with the Ramones and Talking Heads rocking and mocking the status quo alongside the Sex Pistols, The Clash, The Jam and The Stranglers. They became one of the biggest bands of the late 70s/80s with a string of top ten hits and platinum albums, earning them Brit Awards, Ivor Novellos and Grammy Awards.  Making history as the first Irish band to have a UK no 1 hit with ‘Rat Trap’, they went on to top the charts in 32 Countries with ‘I Don't Like Mondays’ and racked up 6 era-defining albums: ‘The Boomtown Rats’ (’77), ‘A Tonic For The Troops’ (’78), ‘The Fine Art Of Surfacing’ (’79), ‘Mondo Bongo’ (’80), ‘V Deep’ (’82) and ‘In The Long Grass’ (’84).  

Says Bob: “_age,curiosity and cash prompted our interest in getting together again. Age and cash are self evident. Curiosity about each other and what we did together in the '70' and 80's.  Curiosity about those songs that seem to have endured and the music and band that powered them.  When I sang again Rat Trap,Looking After No 1, Mondays, Someone's Looking At You, Banana Republic, She's So Modern etc, there was nothing I would change.  On re-hearing, on re-singing them I understood that they could have been written yesterday. the circumstances within which they were written hadn't changed. Tragically and unfortunately.I could sing those words with utter conviction. This isn't nostalgia rather perhaps a time to be angry again.  A time to hear a great band like The Boomtown Rats again. If only for a short while...”

The songstress worked on the song for the film, which is due to hit stores on October 1, and it was originally written by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman, but recorded by Jodi Benson who voices the main character of Ariel. 

Last month, the 'Call Me Maybe' sensation shared a photograph of herself via Instagram (pictured above left) that showed off her newly coloured red hair, which is also the shade worn by Ariel in the 1989 Disney classic although she didn't mention her source of inspiration for the change.

Last week, Jepsen revealed on her Twitter page that she wants a pet pooch, but is disappointed that her touring lifestyle isn't the right environment for such a dependent animal :"Really wanting to buy a puppy dog but pretty sure my schedule won't allow it."

The British singer was at the mercy of the hair clippers in March as she had her head shaved for Comic Relief's Red Nose Day.

Speaking to Glamour magazine, Jessie J - who raised at least £500,000 through shedding her locks - said that the move was one of the best moments of her career so far. She said:

"Obviously, shaving my head was a massive highlight. I've been wanting to do it for a long time but I wanted to be famous enough that it would raise a lot of money."

The 'Wild' star added: "The Olympics last August were unreal, it feels like yesterday and it was the most exhilarating feeling to be part of Britain's history. The [Queen's Diamond] Jubilee, obviously, was a huge moment, too. Being back on The Voice [has also been a highlight], and writing my second album has been a huge thing. It's been really challenging but I'm really proud of myself."

Police in Paris have confirmed that a rogue thief stole three gold and diamond necklaces belonging to the rock singer.

Rose is said to have been left "fuming" over the incident, which is believed to have occurred at a "private gathering" in Paris the day after the band played at the city's Bercy stadium.

Paris police have said that an investigation is currently underway into the theft, but they added that Rose was not thought to be wearing the jewellery at the time.

The classic rock band are currently on tour in Europe, recently playing a number of shows in the UK -  with some fans complaining about their now infamous late stage arrival.

The event, which takes place on June 4 near the The Queen Victoria Memorial at Buckingham Palace, will see the likes of Sir Paul McCartney, Sir Elton John, JLS and Jessie J perform.

It has been organised by the BBC and Gary Barlow, with free tickets for the event to be available through a ballot system on the event's website.

Speaking about the event, Barlow said that it will be one of the most "exciting live music shows" in years. He said:

"The Diamond Jubilee concert will celebrate the 60 years of The Queen's reign with an amazing line-up of world-class artists coming together to play at one of the biggest and most exciting live music shows in recent years."
