Garbage question Angelina Jolie's 'heroism' after revealing double mastectomy

Earlier this week, Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie wrote an article about how she recently underwent a double mastectomy after it was confirmed that she carried the BRCA1 gene, which gave her an 87% chance of developing breast cancer.

Jolie's article went viral with people from the public and media praising her honesty and bravery, but rockers Garbage took to their official Twitter page this afternoon (May 17) to question the attention her piece has received.

The band tweeted: "Why is Angelina Jolie talking about her tests + preventative procedures most women can’t afford, being considered heroic by the media?"

In the editorial, Jolie urged women to get tested for the gene and explained that it will cost the average American a couple of thousand dollars to get it checked out.

CNN recently published a response to her exposé, which was written by Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice professor H. Gilbert Welch who explains that it shouldn't be a widespread cause for concern because "more than 99% of women do not have BRCA1 -- or BRCA2."

Slayer guitarist Jeff Hanneman died from alcohol related cirrhosis

Slayer have announced that guitarist Jeff Hanneman died because of "alcohol related cirrhosis".

As previously reported, the 49-year-old thrash metal pioneer passed away on May 2 after suffering from liver failure.

The musician was recovering from a flesh-eating disease acquired via a spider bite in 2011 and it was originally unclear if the death was connected.

However, Slayer have posted a statement on their website announcing that Hanneman passed away due to an alcohol related condition. They said:

"We've just learned that the official cause of Jeff's death was alcohol related cirrhosis. While he had his health struggles over the years, including the recent Necrotizing fasciitis infection that devastated his well-being, Jeff and those close to him were not aware of the true extent of his liver condition until the last days of his life."

The statement continued: "Contrary to some reports, Jeff was not on a transplant list at the time of his passing, or at any time prior to that. In fact, by all accounts, it appeared that he had been improving – he was excited and looking forward to working on a new record."

Lauryn Hill sentenced to three months in jail for tax evasion

Lauryn Hill has received a three month jail sentence for tax evasion.

The charge relates to the singer not paying taxes on roughly £1.2m of earnings she made between 2005 and 2007.

Hill, who pleaded guilty last year, also faces three months of home confinement.

In a statement to a New Jersey court, Hill - who claimed she failed to pay taxes after quitting music and raising children - said:

"I needed to be able to earn so I could pay my taxes, without compromising the health and welfare of my children, and I was being denied that."

Before sentencing, her attorney said that the singer had previously paid £624,000 in accordance with the New Jersey state.

As previously reported, Hill recently unleashed a new track, which was rush-released due to a "legal deadline".

Nick Cannon posts health documentary online

Nick Cannon has posted online the first episode of a documentary looking into his health.

Cannon has suffered in recent times from kidney disease and also autoimmune disease lupus, which was found after blood clots were discovered in his lungs.

Yesterday (April 2) he posted on his official website the first video from a series of clips which will document his battle with health problems.

It sees Cannon whilst in hospital, with his grandfather coming in to visit. Speaking about the video, Cannon said:

"Words can't express how grateful and humbled I was by the outpouring of support when I fell ill a few months ago. I realized there was no way I could fully return all the love that was – and is still – shown, but it doesn't mean I can't give it a try. Kidney disease and Lupus are serious ailments but, as you'll see through these videos in the coming weeks, it is possible to put the reins on it a bit and gain control of your health and wellness. I thank all of you for the continuous messages, and want you to know it inspires me to keep pushing. Hoping this series serves as inspiration for anyone dealing with kidney disease, lupus or ANY ILLNESS to keep pushing as well."
