Daft Punk on course for a third week at No.1 with 'Get Lucky'

French electro-duo Daft Punk have managed to maintain their No.1 position with 'Get Lucky' on the UK singles chart today (May 8) as the midweek update was confirmed.

The song held off tough competition from a new entry at No.2 by Chris Malinchak with 'So Good To Me' and if they cling on to the top spot until Sunday when the positions are confirmed it will be their third week at No.1. 'Get Lucky', according to the Official Charts Company, is also on course to break the half-a-million copies sales barrier this week.

Armin van Buuren's new single, 'This Is What It Feels Like', has debuted at 6, Passenger's 'Let Her Go' is a non-mover at 4, and P!nk's 'Just Give Me A Reason' is down 2 spots to No.10.

Gabrielle Aplin's 'Panic Cord' has made an appearance at 18 this afternoon, Goo Goo Dolls' classic hit 'Iris' has dropped 22 places to No.34, and Imagine Dragons' 'Radioactive' is up 1 to No.13.

Daft Punk: 'We didn't use computers to make our new album'

French electro-duo Daft Punk have revealed that while a lot of people may expect them to have used laptops for their new album, 'Random Access Memories', they decided against them because they couldn't express what they wanted to using computers.

During an interview with Billboard, the 'Get Lucky' stars explained that it's becoming more common for EDM producers to rely on technology to produce sounds, but after trying to get a desirable result from machines for their own new offering it soon became clear they weren't going to achieve what they were aiming for:

"We really felt that the computers are not really music instruments, and we were not able to express ourselves using a laptop. We tried, but were not successful. It’s not really a judgment or criticism of any of the music today; rather trying to bring a different point of view and different alternative."

Referring to how music is made today, Daft Punk added: "The problem with the way to make music today, these are turnkey systems; they come with preset banks and sounds. They’re not inviting you to challenge the systems themselves, or giving you the ability to showcase your personality, individuality. They’re making it as if it’s somehow easier to make the same music you hear on the radio. Then it creates a very vicious cycle: How can you challenge that when the system and the media are not challenging it in the first place?"

Electro-duo Daft Punk have revealed that collaborating with Pharrell Williams was a "natural" step for them.

The French pair, who recently shot to No.1 in countries all over the world with their new single, told Obsession.fr that asking him to appear on their record was an easy decision because they loved his style and music, and were impressed with his 'elegance':

"It felt natural to invite him to be part of our album. He's a born performer in every way, who oozes elegance. He's not always had the opportunity to show he can be an excellent singer, even though he has earned his place in the legacy of mythical performers.”

Nile Rodgers, who also appears on the 'Get Lucky' single with Pharrell and Daft Punk, also recently described his contribution to the cut as "natural":

"About a year ago, I get a knock on the door – first a virtual one and then a real knock – from Guy-Manuel and Thomas. The collaboration felt so unbelievably natural that it made me realise that I need to be in the studio with people."
