One Direction and more sign up for Global Citizen Tickets campaign

The likes of One Direction have lent their weight to a campaign which encourages social change through the incentive of gig tickets.

Other acts like Beyoncé, Kanye West and Ke$ha are also teaming up for the Global Poverty Project initiative, which encourages music fans to become DIY activists.

Fans can gain points by undertaking a number of actions relating to social change and poverty causes, such as sharing a video on Facebook or signing a petition.

The points can then be redeemed for the chance to win concert tickets for a number of big name acts.

In a statement, One Direction said: "We are thrilled to be part of the Global Citizen campaign - a brilliant way to reward fantastic volunteers fighting against global poverty. We can't wait to see some 'global citizens' at our shows!"

Chris Brown facing trouble for "smoking weed" on stage in Ghana

A petition has been launched to encourage action to be taken against Chris Brown after he allegedly smoked marijuana on stage in Ghana.

The US singer performed in the country on March 6 but video footage from the gig appears to show Brown smoking a joint and then playing songs that reference getting "high".

Ghanaian youth activist Jonathan Osei-Owusu told Radio.com that he wants action to be taken against Brown for promoting the use of marijuana, as well as flouting a recent ban on public smoking. He said:

"He promoted an illegality. You can see from the video and yet he was let go free."

Osei-Owusu continued: "The last two days, I have been with the police and an investigation has commenced. The police have moved swiftly and they are not leaving anything unturned."

Organisers of the concert reportedly denied any drug use occurred on stage, calling the incident a "stunt".

Brian May on badger cull bill passing: 'It's a tragedy'

Legendary Queen guitarist Brian May has spoken out about his frustration after the government approved a bill to cull badgers.

The rocker has been campaigning against it for some time and even collected 167,000 signatures on a petition against the cull so was heartbroken to discover that the bill had been passed. Speaking about it, May explained:

"My initial reaction was sadness really, and a certain amount of frustration, obviously, and kind of despondency. Everybody thought that because we won the debate (in the House of Commons), that the cull was off, but it's not. It's never been so. The government has never taken its foot off the pedal."

"I think it's very, very sad... This is a tragedy for Britain's wildlife... I think it's disastrous and a tragedy."

Heartthrob Cory Monteith, who plays the role of Finn on the hit U.S. series 'Glee', has urged his Twitter followers to help save a Canadian building from being "turned into condos" by signing a petition.

He took to his official social networking page last night (January 13) and asked his 1.4 million fans to add their signatures to a document that is trying to stop the conversion from happening:

"the @waldorfhotel, a cultural bastion for the city of Vancouver, is in imminent danger of being turned into condos. Sign the petition!"

He then posted the link and added: "I know everyone is watching the globes, but this place is really special and Vancouver has enough condominiums. #savethewaldorf"

His girlfriend and 'Glee' co-star, Lea Michele, attended the Golden Globes ceremony yesterday evening although he wasn't with her for the event.

One Direction back Greenpeace Arctic campaign

One Direction have lent their support to a campaign run by Greenpeace to help conserve the Arctic.

The environmental group are hoping to convince the United Nations to call the region a sanctuary, ending oil exploration and unsustainable fishing in the area.

They are launching a petition to rally support for the cause, which will then be planted on the Arctic sea bed once completed.

Stars such as One Direction and Sir Paul McCartney have added their names to the cause, whilst actor Robert Redford has also signed up.

Speaking about the campaign, executive director of Greenpeace International Kumi Naidoo said:

"The Arctic is coming under assault, and needs people from around the world to stand up and demand action to protect it. A ban on offshore oil drilling and unsustainable fishing would be a huge victory against the forces ranged against this precious region and the four million people who live there."

The people of Detroit sign a petition against Nickelback

Nickelback are due to play the halftime show at a football match between the Detroit Lions and the Green Bay Packers on Thanksgiving, but a petition led by the Lions backer may get in their way.

Dennis Guttman has started an online petition to get another band to play during the game instead of the Canadian rockers, most famous for their song, 'How You Remind Me'.

This is his plea:

"This game is nationally televised; do we really want the rest of the U.S. to associate Detroit with Nickelback? Detroit is home to so many great musicians and they chose Nickelback?!? ... This is completely unfair to those of us who purchased tickets to the game. At least the people watching at home can mute their TVs. The Lions ought to think about their fans before choosing such an awful band to play at halftime".

Detroit has produced huge stars like Aretha Franklin, Alice Cooper, Madonna, Kid Rock, Eminem, Sufjan Stevens, Jack White and many others.

Thanksgiving falls on November 24 this year and so far, 30,000 people have signed the online petition.

Check out Nickelback's videos for 'How You Remind Me' and 'Rockstar':
