Madness to bid farewell to BBC Television Centre with live show

British band Madness are set to perform a special hour-long concert tonight (March 22) at the BBC to mark the closure of Television Centre.

They are set to perform from the car park outside of the iconic building, which has housed the company for 53 years, and it will be broadcast on BBC 4 from 7.30pm.

Richard Klein, controller of BBC 4, said that there isn't a better band to celebrate the end of such an important era: "I can think of no better band than Madness to help celebrate a golden age of television coming out of the BBC's Television Centre, and I am really pleased that one of Britain's finest groups has agreed to come along and help BBC4 celebrate in fine style. Madness, as always, are one step beyond!"

The band also spoke about the impending concert, adding: "We've played at some exciting places in London lately but the closing of BBC TV Centre. Well, that is close to our hearts, as a band we grew up there, those walls have plenty of Madness tales to tell, a sad day, the end of an era, oh, but what a celebration! We're honoured to be the band the Beeb have chosen for this fond farewell.”

One Direction fans let down by 'misleading' BBC competition

Two die-hard One Direction fans have been issued an official apology by the BBC after they won a competition to meet the lads and attend one of their recent concerts.

Hannah Hastings, 20, and Louisa Marsden, 21 (pictured left), were promised amazing seats at the boyband's Belfast gig along with the opportunity to meet them afterwards after winning a contest that was organised by BBC Radio 1.

The girls paid £350 of their own money to travel to the venue and put themselves up in a hotel for the night, but were utterly disappointed when they arrived at the Odyssey arena to discover they could barely see the stage from their seats and weren't granted any backstage access as promised.

Hastings explained: "We were so excited when we won - we are both massive fans of the band and especially Harry Styles. We heard the competition for tickets being advertised on Radio 1 so I phoned up and got through."

"It was specifically stated by Radio 1 DJ Gemma Cairney that the prize offered the opportunity to meet and greet the One Direction boys themselves. I went live on air and correctly answered questions about which cities in Britain One Direction were playing. But the seats were nothing special at all and we were a long way from the front."

A BBC spokesperson has since made a formal apology to the girls and have given them signed One Direction merchandise as compensation: "The error in which a Radio 1 DJ mistakenly referred to the prize as a “meet and greet” was corrected on air and the nature of the prize was clearly communicated throughout the day."

“The prize of tickets to the sold-out One Direction concert was provided in accordance with the terms and conditions of the competition. As a gesture of good will, we have also arranged for the winner to receive personalised signed merchandise from the band."

David Bowie set for fastest-selling album of 2013 and a No.1 position

Iconic singer David Bowie is heading for No.1 with his brand new album, 'The Next Day', and it is also on course to be the fastest-selling record of 2013.

The Official Charts Company explained that not only did the new offering peak at the top spot during today's midweek update (March 13), it has also sold an impressive 66,000 copies since its release two days ago, which is just behind Biffy Clyro's record-setting first week sales figure of 71,600 with 'Opposites'.

Bon Jovi's new album, 'What About Now', has debuted at No.2, Hurts' 'Exile' has made an appearance today at 6, and Emeli Sande's 'Our Version Of Events' remains in the Top 10 at No.3.

The new single from former Pussycat Dolls singer Nicole Scherzinger, 'Boomerang', has landed at No.1 on today's (March 13) midweek chart update.

If she manages to hold on to the top spot until Sunday (March 17) when the positions are confirmed, this will be her second solo No.1 single after the success of 'Don't Hold Your Breath' last year.
