The 31-year-old explained that the 'Angels' hitmaker's self-assured attitude must stem from his own insecurities and he hopes to never become that way because he doesn't think it would 'feel good':

"I'm never going to be like Robbie Williams, who's really cocky. But somewhere in his head he's probably the most insecure person in the world. If cockiness comes from a genuine place, then how good is it to feel like that?"

"That will never be me. But I don't know... give me a year and I might be the cockiest bloke in the world!"

James added that despite still being on the outside of the star circle, he doesn't get phased by celebrities as he was good friends with the late Amy Winehouse so is used to attention:

"I am a little shy but I'm not starstruck - my best friend was one of the biggest superstars in the world. I met Mariah Carey years ago at a Capital Radio thing and I stayed silent and acted like a total kn*b! I grew up in Canning Town, singing 'Hero' aged five."

I was trying to play cool and be really nice. As soon as he walked out I ran and I hid under the craft service table for like two minutes because I couldn't believe it was happening."

The Brighton singer is unleashing the track 'Animal' as the next cut from his debut album 'Contrast'.

It follows releases such as 'Vegas Girl' as Maynard looks to evolve from a rising star and into a bona fide pop icon.

The song, which has been reworked with Wiley, is being released via download on January 21.

The gritty video sees the young star perform in a gloomy looking industrial space.

Maynard meanwhile recently revealed that he was left starstruck after randomly meeting Rihanna on a plane.

He said that she congratulated him on his music - but he was too in awe to form a proper reply.

The pair had never met previously - but it seems the Brighton lad has made something of an impression on the Bajan beauty.

Maynard revealed to The Sun that he was minding his own business on a flight from Los Angeles when he was unexpectedly praised by the 'Unapologetic' star. He said:

"I was on a plane back from LA to London and I was just sitting in my seat and then all of a sudden there was a tap on the chair. I turned around and it was Rihanna. I just stared at her. She said, 'Hi. Congratulations on everything!' and then she wandered off. I tried to say something but I just kind of went, 'Er... um.. er...' and that's all that came out. It really wasn't that great as a reply. I just couldn't believe it. That's the most starstruck I have ever been."

He added: "Getting to work with Pharrell was exciting but I had 17 hours a day to get prepared to meet him, but this... it was just unexpected."

In a new interview with Digital Spy, the heartthrob explained that he gets nervous around certain people and songstress Katy Perry sets his heart racing:

"I was starstruck by Michelle Obama. She's an amazing-looking lady, and I'm a massive Barack Obama fan anyway. Katy Perry still gets me every time. She's very funny in person! We met at the Teen Choice Awards and she pulled my cheeks apart and told me how cute I was. My life was literally flashing before my eyes!"

Although the lads are currently in the USA on their debut stateside headlining tour, Horan opened up about the progress of their new album and revealed that Tom from McFly has penned a track for the group and they will team up with singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran once their American dates are over:

"Tom from McFly has just written a song for us and it's very, very good! He wrote a song on the last album too and we love his style. We've got another writing session with him soon which should be fun. We're also working with Ed Sheeran again - when we get back from America it's straight to the studio with him!"

The 'Blackbird' icon performed at Manchester's Evening News Arena on Monday, December 19 as part of his latest tour and told reporters that it's great to have famous fans:

"I always like the celebs coming. I've always been a bit like that. The Beatles used to make fun of me — 'You're a bit starstruck!' and I'd say, 'Come on! It's Prince Philip — he's a Royal!' I have an innocent excitement about it all."

"I knew Wayne Rooney was coming. Rooney, he's not a bad player, my boy. And I hear he plays guitar. Don't tell him but I've got to get his autograph for one of my grandkids. There's always a bit of that for the grandkids. Peter Kay is a great guy and JK is a lovely girl and I'm lucky to know them a little bit. I hope I put a good show on for them."

It was also recently announced that the legendary superstar will release a brand new album in 2012, which is set to be made up of "the songs which inspired the songs”.
