Renowned folk musician Steve Bonham starts his Get Your Boots On Tour - May 25th 2013

Following the well-received launch of Steve Bonham’s single Steady at Bellingham’s Mini BAA festival, renowned folk singer Steve is getting his boots on ready for a musical odyssey along Hadrian’s Wall. Steve’s unique take on the tradition of travelling musicians will see him walk from gig to gig along the 85 miles of the spectacular Hadrian’s Wall Path.

The tour kicks off at Ireby Music Festival on Saturday 25th May followed by the first leg of the walk from Cumbria arriving at Heddon on the Wall, Northumberland on June 1st. Steve will then take the tour to Derby and Southwell Folk Festival before returning north for a grand finale at the Folkalpoint festival at The Sage Gateshead on November 30th 2013.

The tour has been inspired by Steve’s long term musical buddy Tim, who developed the neurological condition ataxia which curtailed his ability to perform. Steve wrote and recorded the song Steady, which features Stephen Doherty’s hauntingly beautiful whistle-playing, to raise awareness of ataxia and to support the charity Ataxia UK’s 2020 campaign to find a cure.

Ataxia is a progressive neurological disorder for which there is no cure. It affects motor co-ordination, walking, vision and speech. There are 10,000 adults with the condition in the UK and it can affect any age group including children. Ataxia UK supports people affected by the condition as well as funding vital research into finding a cure. www.ataxia.org.uk/

Steve Bonham says “I want to do something about this ataxia thing and I want to make more people aware of it - so people don’t think those affected are drunk or stupid. I want people to see beyond the stumble and the uncertainty to the still strong person within. And I want to raise some dosh so that good research by clever people can go on.”

Steve will be show casing Steady along with songs from his 2012 critically acclaimed album ‘The Moon’s High Tide’ and some new pieces. He will be joined by the “Bishop” (keyboards, tuba and percussion) and special guests to create some exhilarating performances of contemporary folk music. Steve is a folk veteran and has collaborated with folk royalty such as ex-Saw Doctor Pearce Doherty, Jimmy Higgins (Irish band Altan) and Fairport Convention’s legendary Dave Pegg.

Steady is now available for free download with donations to Ataxia UK. http://www.stevebonham.net/steady or to view http://youtu.be/eHg-x4ubk3g

The five nominees will be put to a public vote via the Music Matters website with voting opening today: http://www.whymusicmatters.org/unsung-heroes/

Each voter will be entered into a competition to win tickets to The BRIT Awards 2012 at London’s O2 Arena on Tuesday 21st February#. Voting closes on Wednesday 15th February with an overall winner crowned Music Matters Unsung Hero of 2012 on 16th February.

And the nominees are...

Katie Ray - Social Media Manager to JLS.

“Katie works round the clock everyday of the week to ensure that we are on top of every social media network avenue and most importantly makes sure we are always up to date with the latest online programs and apps. Without Katie on our side we would be left behind with how quickly technology moves. No task is too much for Katie, she is an indispensable member of the JLS team and doesn’t get enough credit so please vote for her to win this amazing, innovative and special award,” said JLS.

Emma Nathan - Photographer and Video maker for Anna Calvi.

"Emma Nathan is an amazing filmmaker and photographer. She did all the artwork and photography for my album and singles, and took most of the press shots that are used in my publications. Her photographs are absolutely integral to the strong visual side of my work. She also filmed the video for my first single ‘Jezebel’, and filmed two tour documentaries whilst travelling with me for four weeks on my European tour. The two films ‘Somewhere Along The Line’ were shown on the Guardian website.

Emma has been working with me from the very beginning, before I was signed, and together we have created striking images which I feel completely sum up the creative aesthetic of my music. She is an incredible artist and I hope she gets more and more recognition for her work." said Anna Calvi.

Adam Sosner - Musical Director and Guitarist to Rizzle Kicks.

“Large up to Adam Sosner for all his hours of dedication in front of a computer, programming our shows, whilst on the road with us. Working to crazy deadlines!” said Rizzle Kicks.

"I would like to nominate my Unsung Hero Mark Murphy! Mark is my tour manager, who is with me every single day — and has become my closest mate and confidante.

He has given up a lot to work with me these last few years, with a wife and beautiful family back in Dublin. Mark is incredibly thoughtful and hard working, he is a crucial member of Team Murs and doesn’t get enough credit so please vote for him to win this deserving award." said Olly Murs.

Rami Yacoub, Carl Falk and Savan Kotecha - Writers and Producers to One Direction.

“We want to nominate Rami Yacoub, Carl Falk and Savan Kotecha as they have been pivotal in building and developing our sound. They co-wrote and produced our first single “What Makes You Beautiful” which gave us our first Number 1 and which is nominated for Best British Single of the year! They are all extraordinarily talented and great guys too!” said One Direction.

The Music Matters campaign aims to get people thinking about the story behind the music they listen to. It is easy to forget that behind each song is a team of dedicated professionals who make it happen. Once an artist has written a song there is then a long process before we can listen to the finished product.

This process takes a lot of time and skill from not only the artists themselves but their music producers, engineers, instrument technicians and a cast of hundreds working behind the scenes.

Without the paid expertise of these people, it would be hard to maintain the quality of music we have today.

The Music Matters campaign aims to highlight all of these people and hopes to remind everyone who loves music to support them by accessing music from legitimate retailers, both on the high street and online..
