YOUR FAVOURITE ENEMIES

‘Youthful Dreams of an Old Empire’ is the stunning debut EP from Montreal based sextet Your Favourite Enemies. Youthful Dreams of an Old Empire’ showcases their blend of alternative, shoegaze, new prog and brooding noise rock, in places reminiscent of The Raveonettes and Crocodiles.

The band are fierce human rights advocates who remain dedicated to their old school DIY ethos on which they established the foundations of the band. This includes starting their own label Hopeful Tragedy Records and turning a Catholic Church into their own recording studio where they record all of their own material, including ‘Youthful Dreams of an Old Empire.’

Combining powerful riffs and strong harmonies with frontman Alex Foster’s introspective lyrics, Your Favourite Enemies’ unique fusion of sonic textures show a distinctive social conscience and symbolist approach.

THE SHOW:

Here’s how the LA Times described your show:

The evening’s talky rhythm (the show had more asides than a Shakespeare tragedy) put the audience immediately under the spell of her folksy grandiosity. Streisand … isn’t just a star — she’s a world view, a style of being, an entire cosmology, with the highest possible thread-count sheets. You don’t just come for the music; you come for the whole church service. The sermon, broken up into bits, is inseparable from the songs.

How would you describe it?

Answer: Wow, they said all that? That’s very interesting. I don’t know how to describe it myself… that’s for you guys, from the press to do. I just try to put together a wonderful show for the audience and in this particular instance it’s a delight for me to have my family alon… my very gifted son, Jason, and my sister, Rozzie. I also love having a sixty piece orchestra and a big choir and working again with the amazing, Chris Botti.

THE ORCHESTRA:

Your concert features a 60 piece orchestra conducted by Bill Ross. When you put a great voice with a great orchestra it provides a huge emotional connection to every seat in the house. Does this help you bring the intimacy of a small theatre to the arena?

Answer: When I’m on stage it doesn’t matter to me whether I’m in a nightclub or an arena… I try to be truthful to the music and the lyrics and that has always guided me throughout my career. I always feed off the energy of a live orchestra and a live audience.

THE SONGS:

With your incredible repertoire, how do you determine which songs to perform?

Answer: I’m always amazed at how many songs I’ve actually recorded from which to choose. This time around I’m choosing some songs that I’ve never sung before and some older ones that I like to reinterpret. I’ve always been blessed to sing songs by the best composers and lyricists throughout the decades. I love finding new meanings in these great songs, whether old or new. If you stick with great material, you can always find inspiration.

THE AUDIENCE:

What is the most important thing you hope your fans take home with them after every show?

Answer: What I hope they take away is a feeling of connection and emotion… and, of course, maybe a souvenir program, a t-shirt for Women’s Heart research and my son’s new CD.

TOURING WITH JASON GOULD & ROSLYN KIND:

In both North American and now with the upcoming European tour, you’re appearing with your son Jason Gould and your sister Roslyn Kind. How did this come about and how does having your family with you enhance the experience?

Answer: Well, I must tell you it was all quite a surprise. I didn’t even know that Jason sang. He brought me a couple of songs he recorded in a studio, as he was about to put out an EP, and I couldn’t believe what I was hearing… my jaw dropped! I asked him if he would come on tour with me and happily, he said yes! I then asked Rozzie to join us and make it a family affair. I love having them on stage with me.

TRUTH ALERTS:

You have introduced a section on ‘Truth Alerts’ on your website. Are you enjoying the direct to fan connection that the internet enables you to have? Is this something you plan on continuing and possibly expanding?

Answer: I hate made up stories, so I will continue. The internet has given me an opportunity to express my thoughts and feelings about the issues of the day directly with my fans. If you read it on my website, it’s something I actually said or wrote.

WHAT’S NEXT?

You’ve won Oscars for Best Actress (Funny Girl) and Best Original Song (Evergreen); received 8 Grammy Awards; your combined album sales of more than 72.5 million in the United States alone (International many more, 120-140 million) exceed that of all other female singers and your first book “My Passion For Design” debuted at number Two on the New York Times Best Seller List. You’re an established philanthropist and a staunch supporter of civil rights. What’s next for the woman’s who’s bold, creative achievements have already garnered so much?

Answer: There aren’t enough hours in the day… I love recording… I am now working on a Duets album with some wonderful artists. I have my eye on a couple of films to direct and, of course, my devotion right now to My Women’s Heart Center at Cedars in Los Angeles and other philanthropic interests. I would like a little more time to tend to my garden, but I’m happy to have my days as full as they are.

After announcing plans to launch their own brand of ale back in 2011, Hanson’s new beer beverage is finally hitting the shelves.

Named MMMhops after the brothers' 1997 breakthrough hit ‘MMMbop’ the beer has been brewed in partnership with Oklahoma’s Mustang Brewing.

All proceeds from sales of MMMhops related merchandise will be donated to the Red Cross disaster relief fund to help victims of a tornado that recently hit Oklahoma – where Hanson hail from.

Taylor Hanson released a statement regarding the charitable donation MMMhops merchandise will raise. He said: “The tragedy hits close to home, especially since this community was among the first places our band performed together, including schools which were lost in the storm. We are hopeful that the proceeds we can galvanize will play a lasting role in the recovery efforts."

As well as the beer itself, MMMhops t-shirts and beer glasses will also be available to buy.

LL Cool J has revealed he's nervous to host the Grammys this weekend.

The 55th Annual Grammy Awards air tomorrow (February 10) on CBS.

It's the rapper-and actor's second turn as host for the prestigious ceremony and in an interview with ET Online, LL explained: "Of course [I get nervous]. It feels good to know that it's a challenge that you accept and you can embrace."

LL knows that there isn't any particular way to calm his anxiety before hitting the stage in front of the music industry's biggest stars. Instead the 45-year-old star has learnt to embrace the challenge.

He explained: "You can't rehearse nerves. You just gotta get out there and do what you gotta do."

LL recently revealed that he hopes his second year hosting the Grammys will be more fun than his first, when the tragic death of legendary singer Whitney Houston overshadowed the prestigious night just a day before.

He said: “It made the event bittersweet and there was a whole cloud of sorry on it. But at the same time, I was glad it went the way it went. We were able to pay respect to Whitney and her family, and at the same time give all of those deserving artists an opportunity to shine.”

Claire Richards discusses battle with anorexia and bulimia during Steps’ heyday

Claire Richards has revealed that she became obsessed with her weight during Steps’ heyday, resulting in a battle with both bulimia and anorexia.

The 34-year-old, who last year reunited with her former band-mates for a TV documentary and subsequent arena tour, admits in her new autobiography, All Of Me, that she struggled to deal with the problem ever since she joined the group:

“During one six-week tour I ate only ONE meal a day — a Happy Meal from McDonald’s — even though I had demanding dance routines every night. When I watch footage of Steps from that time I look horribly thin.

“If I’d have seen myself back then I’d have thought, ‘You’re ill, there’s something wrong with you. By now, my weight loss wasn’t due to stress taking my appetite away. I actually thought I was fat and was seriously limiting what I ate. I couldn’t see that in reality I was a bag of bones.

And the ‘Tragedy’ star also confessed that during another period in the band, she only stopped making herself sick after eating when she found out it causes teeth to rot:

“I didn’t do the throwing up thing a lot because I didn’t like being sick. And I never considered I had an eating disorder because I never gorged and did it.

“Maybe my bulimia was worse because I didn’t do that. But I loved the feeling of a flat stomach, like you hadn’t eaten anything. It made me feel brilliant.

“I liked that feeling of getting thinner and thinner. That empty feeling makes you feel thin. It was only when I read in a magazine that bulimics’ teeth rot that I finally stopped.”

Steps say they haven't discussed new album

Steps’ Lee Latchford-Evans says the band haven’t spoken about recording a new album together.

Reports surfaced last month that Sony reneged on a deal which would have seen the newly reunited quintet release the long-awaited follow-up to 2000’s 'Buzz.'

However, the 37-year-old said told The Daily Star that the group didn’t have any concrete plans to head back into the recording studio:

“There’s talk of a new album but it’s just speculation.

“We would love to do it but we haven’t actually sat down with anyone to discuss how Steps might work in the modern world, and with which producers.”

The ‘Tragedy’ stars, who yesterday were announced on the bill for July’s PWL reunion show in Hyde Park, will kick off their sell-out UK & Ireland arena tour in Belfast on Apr 2 and Lee says that the group will not disappoint:

“We ain’t got any elephants on stage but we’ve got a few things the fans really want.”
