Pressparty catch up with Cameron Whiley

Cameron Whiley is a rising star of the UK hip-hop scene and the 19-year-old has just released his new single, 'Reh Reh Reh'. The track's video has been viewed over 150,000 times on YouTube, so what better time for Pressparty to catch up with the Nottingham lad to find out more.

What's the story behind 'Reh Reh Reh?'

The story behind the song is actually quite a funny concept, to be honest. Me and a group of mates were walking out. It was snowing at the time, and someone thought it'd be funny at the time to stick a stone in a snowball and dash it at one of us lot. It actually missed us and hit the group of lads in front of us. To cut a long story short, they all got bit distempered and started causing arguments. Me being a young kid at the time, I was at the front of pack. I got hit over the head by them - next thing I know, black eye. We were in the studio all week, so the next day I went back there and got to the studio and my head opened up again and started bleeding.

The producer said 'What's happened to your head mate?' and said there's a track here, you should start writing about it. The actual track took about a week to make. It was never actually intended at all - it was one of those ideas we thought we'd just lay down. I then started relating to different things that had happened, like arguing with the missus, and obviously it says in the track that I woke up the next morning on the sofa. Next thing, I look in the fridge and there's no milk so that really pissed me off. I go to the shops to find that some geezer is trying to hold it up. Basically, it's a series of events that happened in a week, but we tried to cram it all in a day so that it would make a track.

So what does 'reh reh reh' exactly mean?

It's a common thing in Nottingham. Say I'm in an argument with my girlfriend and I can't quite think of what I'm trying to say - I'm still trying to put a point across. I've got to come up with something. It's just like cutting a long conversation down, if you know what I mean. It's like slang. It's a common saying round here.

How would you describe your sound?

I'd say it's ska-infused hip-hop, although I like to mix up a lot of different genres. If I'm doing a gig and there's people at the gig, not everybody likes the same music - I like to make a different track for different people so that everybody gets a piece of the cake. My own unique sound is definitely ska-infused hip-hop. Madness do a lot of ska stuff, so I thought 'Why can't we mix good old ska with a bit of up-to-date hip-hop?'.

Along with Madness, what sort of acts have influenced you?

Madness are a main influence. My mum and dad have always liked them but the person who loved Madness the most in my family was my grandad. He used to listen to it all the time. The things that kind of motivate me more today are the underground artists. My main inspiration are my family - I can't really put my inspiration down to anyone in the music industry; I listen to music but I don't vibe off anyone, if you know what I mean. My family push me. If it weren't for my family, I wouldn't be doing what I'm doing. Going down the music side of things, the artists that kind of appeal to me at the minute are like Mumford & Sons. They've got a lot of stories to tell. I've really got a feel for that at the minute. Old UB40 too - some of their stuff was absolutely brilliant.

What plans do you have for the future? Is there an album in the works?

We've already got about 22 tracks, but we're just going to keep making more. We're not really looking at releasing an album yet - we're making tracks as follow-ups, if you know what I mean. And then we'll possibly think about putting out an album. But at the minute, we're just trying to build a name for ourselves, because this is a long-term project - we don't want to just come and go.

You have been writing since you were about 12 - do you feel like your hard work is now paying off?

Definitely. It's been about seven years now, but I'd happily do another seven years hard work. It's not fully paid off yet though, there's still a lot more work to do.

How far do you think you can go?

As far as life takes me really. You can't really put a limit on that kind of thing. You just gotta make what you can make and hope for the best.

Did you ever think about going on something like X Factor or Britain's Got Talent?

A lot of people said I should go on Britain's Got Talent, but I don't believe in the whole X Factor thing - that's purely for singing. If you've got this amazing voice and an amazing face then yeah, you can probably get through to the finals or whatever. I've never really watched it all, because I'm not really too sure about it.

Would you consider yourself to be like a poet?

I do actually. I thought to myself 'Right, there's only going to be one way about this - you either sing or you rap'. Obviously I do write tracks that are like poetry, but I work with them. It's poetry to start off with. I write down a lot of stuff, then alter the bits and bobs, just so the story makes sense. I don't like it when people just go on and waffle about nothing. There's no point. That's a money maker. I like things that people can relate with. I like to make sure everyone's happy. This is the entertainment industry - we're in it to entertain people, this is our job. We have to think about audience and have to engage them.

Alexandra Burke album "coming soon"

Former X Factor champ Alexandra Burke has revealed her new album is "coming sooner" than her fans realise.

The 24-year-old songstress is currently in New York City recording tracks for her third chart offering.

Burke - who parted ways from her record company RCA a few weeks ago - revealed what fans can expect from her upcoming release.

Speaking to That Grape Juice she said: "I don't want to put a tag on the music, but at the end of the day my voice is soulful so the music will always be passionate and soulful. I'd describe my 'new sound' as a 'Whitney Houston meets Coldplay'. It's pure, it has influences of pop, soul, R&B, even hip-hop - it's really everything I love.

She added: "But I'm making sure the focus is on my voice. The album is coming sooner than my fans think it is. I'm working on it now. In the meanwhile, I'm looking forward to giving them something as a pure Thank You for their support before that."

Burke recently performed her first US gig alongside Mary J Blige, Erykah Badu and Patti LaBelle for a show to honour music legend Chaka Khan.

Burke excitedly wrote on Twitter ahead of the June 10 event: "My 1st US gig is next week!! Catch me w/ @fatbellybella @maryjblige @MsPattiPatti @Jennifersspot to honour @ChakaKhan #LEGENDS! (sic)."

Model Marsh and former X Factor contestant Cocozza have been linked together in the past but nothing concrete has stemmed from the gossip.

Speaking to Zoo, however, Marsh said that Cocozza and his reality TV friend Kirk Norcross are too young for her.

And she added that she could "teach them a thing or two" in the bedroom - and ultimately "ruin" them. She said:

"I'm always snogging Kirk, and while he wants it to go further, I'm not putting out for him. It's the same with Frankie. I love those guys, but they're young."

She continued: "I could teach them a thing or two in the bedroom, I'd ruin them."

Frankie Cocozza opens his heart over death of close friend

Frankie Cocozza has opened his heart over the recent death of his close friend, Connor Saunders.

19-year-old Saunders passed away in April after suffering head injuries from a fight, with good friend Cocozza helping to carry his coffin at his funeral on Friday (11 May).

Speaking to the Sun, the X Factor contestant said that he was in a hotel room in Scotland when he heard news that Saunders, who he had known for much of his life, was in a critical condition - with doctors only giving him two hours to live.

However, he couldn't fly down to England because he left his passport in his room - which meant he had to take a train. He said:

"I'd been on a night out. I was still half asleep when my phone rang again. It was my mate Olly, who told me that Connor was in intensive care and the doctors had given him two hours to live. I threw on my clothes, grabbed my wallet and ran out of the hotel, leaving everything else behind. I didn't realise I'd left my passport in my room."

He added: "I knew then I wasn't going to be with Connor at the end - and I was in a terrible state. I felt like I had let him down. I had to spend the next five hours on a train, where I just sat and cried."

The singer unfortunately didn't make it in time to see Saunders before he died. He said:

"It was the saddest sight you can imagine. Connor was lying on a bed with his family around him - all people who mean the world to me. They were each touching him and crying. I walked over, leaned down and kissed my friend gently on the top of his head. Then I said goodbye. At that moment I knew that my life would never be the same again."
