Capitol Records CEO on 5 Seconds of Summer: 'They’re highly proficient musicians'

Capitol Records CEO Steve Barnett has praised 5 Seconds of Summer and their ability.

The record label man signed the band to Capitol in the US and the group have since achieved a No.1 album in the States.

The Australians are often dogged with the boyband tag, partly due to their links with One Direction.

However, Barnett told Billboard that 5 Seconds of Summer are more of a band in its traditional sense due to their musicality.

He said: “5SOS is a band in the true sense of the word. They’re highly proficient musicians who write their own songs."

The quartet are currently supporting One Direction on tour and Barnett added:

“Obviously, the association with One Direction is integral to what’s happening for them. But an opening slot on a major tour doesn’t come with a guarantee that the headliner’s audience will embrace you."
