5SOS on their haters: 'It's fun when you're confusing people and hopefully we'll inspire some of them'

'She Looks So Perfect' pop-punkers 5 Seconds Of Summer recently sat down for an interview with Rolling Stone magazine and opened up about constantly being referred to as a boyband.

Frontman Luke Hemmings admitted that it's funny to confuse people where genres are concerned as they're not really a pop band at all, but there are clear elements that link them to that: "It's written by us, and it's real. People say, 'Is it pop? Is it rock? What is it?'"

Drummer Ashton Irwin went onto explain that he often sees people who consider themselves to be 'real rock fans' bashing his band publicly on social media sites: "It's fun when you're confusing people. I'll look online and see some 30-year-old dude saying, 'They're not rock! Bullet for My Valentine for life!' But his daughter probably likes our band. And she'll start her own band."

Irwin also opened up about the part of Australia they grew up in together, describing it as a 'wasteland', and confessed that once they met up and formed a band it was as if they had a way out: "It's not a nurturing place for music. As soon as I met these guys I thought, 'We're all gonna get the f**k out of here with this band.'"
