5 Seconds of Summer have spoken of their joy at winning at American Music Award.

The Australians picked up the New Artist of the Year prize at the event on Sunday (November 23).

The quartet also performed at the ceremony and drummer Ashton Irwin took to Twitter afterwards to say:

"Can't believe you guys won us an American music award...So insane, I can't even grasp how I'm feeling, thank you so much"

5 Seconds of Summer meanwhile recently confirmed plans to release a live album.

The pop-rockers will unleash 'LIVESOS' on December 15.
