5SOS's Ashton Irwin reveals One Direction support slot anxiety

Pop-punk band 5 Seconds Of Summer considerably raised their profile by opening for One Direction and member Ashton Irwin has revealed that they were really nervous about the slot because their music is so different from the boyband's material.

Speaking to Rhythm magazine, Irwin explained that supporting a boyband was a risky move because they do have different audiences, but it paid off:

"I was nervous if the audience would even like us because our music is pretty raw - it's not straight up pop music. It's loud, live and heavily guitar driven. We don't sing like those other dudes, we yell and we carry on and it's more raucous."

During the same interview, Irwin also spoke about what he hopes 5SOS will bring to young people: "I hope we get some people playing guitars and drums again, I think that's a great thing our band could do for people."
