Oxfam are delighted to announce the launch party for Oxjam Brixton Takeover on August 18th, with a killer lined up of DJs including the Grammy-winning pop star Elly Jackson AKA La Roux, Maxi Jazz of chart-topping stadium dance act Faithless, plus the return of influential turntablist/producer Patrick Carpenter, best-known as PC from DJ Food, and one of The Cinematic Orchestra.
The launch party takes place on the terrace and roof of the newly-refurbished Lambeth (formerly DEX), so what better way to support a good cause than to party in the vibrant Brixton sunshine, with a soundtrack provided by both international stars and cult underground figures alike?
The Oxjam Brixton takeover is a multi-venue event in Brixton (focussing on talent with strong links to the area), that takes place on October 19th. More information on the participating venues and performers will be announced over the coming weeks. Expect some of Brixton’s best clubs, bars and pubs to be on board, playing host to well-known and much-loved bands/artists/DJ, a wealth of up-and-coming talent, plus food, drink and other festival-related jollity.
With one album under her belt and a highly-anticipated follow-up in the pipeline, Elly Jackson AKA La Roux has achieved huge commercial success and critical acclaim worldwide. The single ‘Bulletproof’ was a UK number one smash, that also reached nubmer 8 in the States, whilst ‘In for the Kill’ was another UK hit – reaching number 2.
2013 has seen Elly debut new tracks 'Kiss and Not Tell', 'Sexotheque' and 'Tropical Chancer' at a series of well received warm-up gigs across the UK, in preparation for her hugely successful slot at this year’s Coachella festival. She’ll continue to headline festivals across Europe and America this summer, in readiness for her second album release.
Maxi Jazz was formerly the MC from huge UK dance act Faithless (that also consisted of Rollo and Sister Bliss). Synonymous with the massive singles ‘Insomnia’, ‘God Is a DJ’ and ‘We Come 1’, Faithless recorded six albums and sold over 15 million records worldwide. The band decided to pursue new musical adventures and thus went their separate ways, after the climax of their aptly- titled ‘Passing TheBaton’ shows at Brixton Academy.
Maxi now DJs, his sets spanning, in his own words “hip hop, R’n’B, soul, funk, reggae and party tunes spanning the last 3 decades, ranging from James Brown to Tom Browne, Marley to YT, Tribe Called Quest, Busta Rymes to Biz Markie.”
Nadia Ksaiba is a DJ and producer who has released music on feted underground labels Disco Bloodbath, Dissident and In Flagranti’s Codek imprint.
Nadia’s productions have gained the patronage of Andrew Weatherall and Erol Alkan, and she’s toured with Simian Mobile Disco, La Roux, and Kindness.
She has guested at nights including Optimo’s 'Hung Up', Erol Alkan’s 'Trash', Arthur Baker’s 'Return to New York', Bugged Out!, Fabric, Plastic People, XOYO and The Social in Paris, plus festivals including Bestival, Eastern Electrics, Stop Making Sense and Festival No.6.
You can catch Nadia on the fortnightly ‘Rhythm Connection’ radio show on NTS, which she presents with Dan Beaumont. Through the show Nadia has interviewed Nile Rodgers, MK, Harvey, Bicep and Horse Meat Disco. She is currently recording her debut album and as the summer approaches, so does the release date for her first solo single.
Patrick Carpenter was formerly a member of DJ Food, a group of influential DJ/producers conceived by Coldcut, who released music on the brilliant indy imprint Ninja Tune. DJ Food’s music incorporated joyous auralcollages of hip hop, beats, Latin, dub, techno, ambient and jungle.
DJ Food started as a Coldcut side project from Jonathan More and Matt Black. Along the way they met Patrick – known simply as PC. A collaborative team began to form, including Paul Brook, Paul Rabiger, Kevin Foakes (AKA Strictly Kev) and Issac Elliston.
Although keeping their hand in as DJs on the albums, Black and More couldn't perform sets twice in one night under the aliases of both Coldcut & DJ Food, so they handed the mantle of live performances over to PC and Strictly Kev. The duo also mixed the now legendary Coldcut ‘Journeys by DJ’ mix album.
Later, PC became so involved with The Cinematic Orchestra that he decided to quit DJ Food, leaving Strictly Kev as the sole director of the project. PC holds a warm place in the hearts of many cerebral-leftfield-sound-lovers, and the Oxjam Brixton Takeover marks the welcome return of this pioneering DJ.
Lick It Back resident MYLON D will be bringing a full selection of finest Jamaican, US and UK cuts from the 60's onwards to The Lambeth.
One of Brixton's finest, MYLON D has played alongside the likes of Mark Ronson, DJ Derek, Bobby Womack, The Gorillaz and Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, plus leading reggae artists on a monthly basis.
The ‘Lick It Back’ live reggae and dancehall session stared life in Notting Hill and has seen some of the UK's finest grace the stage and decks, including Tippa Irie, Spikey Tee, DJ Jawa & Sweetie Irie.

The Oxjam Takeover:
The Oxjam Takeover is a multi-venue one-ticket-gives-access-to-all events. Since starting in 2009 there have been 129 Takeovers that have generated £525,000 for Oxfam. The events take place all across the UK on one weekend in October and are organized by volunteers with a focus on local, grassroots music. This year the 60 Takeover gigs will aim to raise a total of £250,000+.
In total the festival has generated over 4000 pieces of media coverage, the majority of which has been about local volunteers and events.
