BBC Music Awards return to BBC One
The musical extravaganza, to be hosted by Fearne Cotton and Claudia Winkleman, will tell the story of the past twelve months in music, with live performances from some of 2016’s best-loved artists and featuring some of the year’s best-selling songs. Announced this morning on the Radio 1 and Radio 2 Breakfast shows, this year’s entertainment extravaganza will feature stunning live performances from a glittering array of the biggest names in music – including multi-platinum record selling and Grammy Award-winning star Michael Bublé who this year released his self-produced ninth album Nobody But Me. Multi-award winning indie rock band Kaiser Chiefs also perform. The group have achieved platinum record sales, Top Ten singles including number one hit Ruby and in 2016 released their sixth studio album Stay Together. Joining them will be Lukas Graham whose hit single 7 Years has catapulted the Danish ghetto pop band to world-wide fame this year and global pop sensation Zara Larsson who enjoyed worldwide success in 2016 with hit singles Lush Life, Ain't My Fault, Tinie Tempah duet Girls Like and David Guetta duet This One's for You which saw her perform at the UEFA Euro 2016 opening and closing ceremonies. Other performers include the multi-platinum award winning singer-songwriter Emeli Sandé who returned to the charts this year with hit single Hurts from her upcoming hotly anticipated second album Long Live The Angels; and Mercury Prize nominees The 1975 whose critically acclaimed I Like It When You Sleep, For You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware Of It reached number one in the UK and US album charts this year. Further acts will be announced over the coming weeks. Bob Shennan, Director, BBC Music says: “From Glastonbury to the BBC Proms, BBC Music has brought some of this year’s most memorable musical moments to millions of music lovers. This year’s BBC Music Awards, to be hosted by two of the UK’s best loved presenters Fearne and Claudia, will shine a light on a fantastic range of incredible artists for what’s sure to be a spectacular night of entertainment.” The show is live on BBC One and bbc.co.uk/music from 8.30-10pm with additional programming on Radio 1 and Radio 2. There will also be coverage of the Red Carpet arrivals plus exclusive interviews. And The One Show will also be live from the event, from 7-7.30pm, meeting the stars and building excitement ahead of the Awards. Claudia Winkleman says: "As the song goes, music was my first love and it will be my last. I’m honoured to help present the BBC Music Awards and am so excited to be working with the very brilliant Fearne." The BBC Music Awards 2016 will feature five awards: BBC Music British Artist of the Year as decided by the BBC Music committee, Song of the Year voted for by members of the public and BBC Music Introducing Artist of the Year decided by the BBC Music Introducing panel. This year there will be two new awards celebrating the best of live and recorded music − BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge Performance of the Year voted for by the Radio 1 Playlist Committee and BBC Radio 2 Album of the Year voted for by the Radio 2 Playlist Committee. On the day of the Awards, Radio 2 will present the Steve Wright Show Music Awards Special between 2-5pm, with live inserts from the dress rehearsals at the ExCel London. Radio 1 joins the party between 4-7pm as Greg James broadcasts live from backstage and the Red Carpet with exclusive interviews and sessions. It’s then back to Radio 2 from 8.30-10pm as Jo Whiley continues the exclusive programming from backstage, giving listeners a sneak peek behind the scenes whilst the Awards are broadcast on BBC One.
