Rupert Everett on new drama Quacks: "the world is already obsessed with doctors and medicine"

What made you sign up to Quacks?
I read the pilot which I thought was very interesting, and original, and funny, and different. I don't know what else I can tell you really but it's been fun. It's a good gamble.

What is your character Dr Hendrick like?
Dr Hendrick is the head of the hospital. He doesn't get his hands dirty. He's quite snooty.

What's his relationship like with the rest of the team?
He doesn't like them and they don't like him. They think he's stuffy and old school.

Is he not willing to learn about the progressive medicine that interests them?
No, he doesn't believe in it.

What does he believe in?
Oh, old wives' tales and witchery and things like that.

Did you do any research?
None at all. I would have done, but I just didn't. James Wood has done all the research.

What's it been like working with the other actors?
I don't know them very well but they're awfully nice.

How would you describe the tone?
I don't know quite where it lies. It's very funny. It isn't slapstick. I don't know what type of comedy it is but it's original.

Given that James has been very authentic to the time, was there anything that surprised you in the script?
Not really. You kind of knew vaguely about these things. I think it's a great idea for a story when the world is already obsessed with doctors and medicine. It's an ongoing fascination.
