A second series of the Balearic cop drama has been commissioned for BBC One Daytime and BBC iPlayer, as series one is confirmed for broadcast on Monday 25 November.

They may have different approaches to policing, but Detectives Blake and Winter (Elen Rhys and Julian Looman) have proved a winning combination for the BBC, with a second series of the feel-good crime drama series set on the UK’s favourite holiday island already commissioned. Filming begins today.

Dan McGolpin, BBC Controller Programming and iPlayer, has commissioned the second series penned by Dan Sefton (The Good Karma Hospital, Trust Me) and with the ten episodes from series two appearing on screens in 2020.

All ten episodes of series one will be available on BBC iPlayer after the first episode airs on BBC One at 2.15pm on Monday 25 November.

Dan McGolpin says: "With the nights drawing in, the time is right to transport yourself to sunnier climes by watching The Mallorca Files on BBC One and on BBC iPlayer from later this month. People are going to love spending time with Miranda and Max in this exciting and stylish first series and I’m delighted to announce that our crime-fighting duo will return for more capers in 2020.”

Key cast members Elen Rhys (DC Miranda Blake), Julian Looman (DC Max Winter) and Maria Fernández-Ache (Police Chief Ines Villegas) will be reprising their roles alongside series regulars Tabata Cerezo (Carmen Lorenzo) and Tanya Moodie (Abbey Parker) and Denis Schmidt (Christian). Meanwhile the second season promises British viewers some well-known faces, with guest stars such as Phil Daniels (Sliced, EastEnders, Quadrophenia) and Josette Simon (Nightflyers, Broadchurch, Blake’s Seven) set to join the adventures on the Balearic island.

The writing team from series one, spearheaded by Dan Sefton (The Good Karma Hospital, Trust Me), will also return and will be further bolstered by a group of established scriptwriting talents, including Damian Wayling (Riviera, Call The Midwife, Thanks For The Memories), Liz Lake (Riviera, EastEnders, Call The Midwife) and Tim Whitnall (Best Possible Taste: The Kenny Everett Story, The Hide) as well as emerging talents such as Jackie Okwera (Emmerdale) and Emily Fairweather. Dominic Barlow will pick up the reins of The Mallorca Files as Series Producer while Bryn Higgins and Rob Evans return as directors. Bryn and Rob will be joined in season two by Christiana Ebohon-Green and Craig Pickles.

Elen Rhys says: "I am absolutely thrilled to be back filming series two of the Mallorca Files. Being recommissioned is a huge show of faith and testament to all the hard work and heart the creatives, cast and crew have poured into the show. Miranda Blake has a good few crimes to solve yet!"

Julian Looman adds: "Getting a second series so soon is a great reward for all the passion, heart and fun we have put into playing the fantastic characters of Max and Miranda. We are hugely grateful for the trust the BBC and the production teams have shown in committing to this second season and we look forward to showcasing audiences more of Max and Miranda’s adventures."

Showrunner Dan Sefton comments: "I’m delighted that the BBC has decided to commission a second series of The Mallorca Files. It’s been a great show to work on and the amazing support from Dan McGolpin and all at the BBC has allowed us to produce a fun, sexy and individual series set in a fantastic location. The experience of setting up and running a writer’s room for this show, full of talented and warm-hearted individuals, is one I’m anxious to repeat so I can’t wait to get started."

Ben Donald, Founder of Cosmopolitan Pictures, says: "I’m delighted and grateful that the BBC has agreed to commission more of the adventures of DCs Blake and Winter in the Mallorcan sun. We’ve got some fantastic new cases lined up for them and can’t wait to get started."

Murray Ferguson Chief Executive and Director, Clerkenwell Films, says: "We couldn’t be more pleased to be making a second series of The Mallorca Files. It’s a witty and exciting show with a big warm heart that I’m confident the audiences are going to love just as much as we enjoy making it."

Set amongst the vibrant international community of the eponymous Spanish island, The Mallorca Files centres around Detective Miranda Blake (Elen Rhys) - an introvert who is used to living by the rules - and her German counterpart Max Winter (Julian Looman), whose approach to policing is based on gut-instinct, with little interest in process. Their dynamic - sometimes in sync, but mostly not - sets the rich humour and playful tone of the series, which marks a welcome return to the police caper.

The Mallorca Files plays out against the backdrop of sun-drenched locations and glamorous lifestyles of the Balearic islanders. It is a Cosmopolitan Pictures/Clerkenwell Films co-production for the BBC. Ben Donald and Murray Ferguson are executive producers, together with Dan Sefton who in season one led a team of writers, which included Rachael New, Sarah-Lou Hawkins, Dan Muirden and Alex McBride.
