The BBC and Getty Images are partnering to create and curate a library of imagery and video of children and families to better reflect diverse audiences from all corners of the UK.

A seed fund of £10,000 is now open for amateur and professional photographers to pitch for funding to help create content in response to certain briefs.

The BBC and Getty Images are issuing a call out to photographers across the UK to join them in creating a library of stock images which showcase the diversity of kids’ lives and their experiences within the UK. The BBC Kids Collection aims to showcase images and videos of children and families who are currently underrepresented in the media, created by a representative group of photographers and videographers.

A seed fund sponsored by BBC Children’s of £10,000 is now open to applications from amateur and professional photographers, with a minimum grant of £250 (and up to £1,000) to be granted to successful applicants who are creating inclusive stories of UK children and families. In addition to the seed funding, successful applicants will have their work represented within the Getty Images library, receiving royalties every time their images are licensed, and receive guidance from Getty Images’ industry-leading creative team.

Hosted on gettyimages.com, the BBC Kids Collection will be available for licensing by media and businesses across the UK and beyond, for uses which include news reporting, marketing communications and advertising campaigns. The library will be live, meaning photographers and videographers who contribute to Getty Images can continue to add images and videos which match the library criteria.

Miranda Wayland, BBC’s Head of Creative Diversity, says: “We know the crucial role the media plays in shaping children’s view of themselves and the world around them, it is therefore vital that we all get it right.

"This is a fantastic initiative from BBC Children’s, who are already trailblazing diversity and inclusion within the industry, and this work will go even further in leading the way, along with Getty Images, to develop new creative talent and build a living library of images for use by all. The BBC Kids Collection is an important game changer and will help ensure we authentically represent all of modern Britain.”

Dr Rebecca Swift, Global Head of Creative Insight at Getty Images, says: “We are a passionate advocate for the realistic visual representation of everyone, so are proud to work alongside the BBC to focus on the accurate and inclusive representation of children and families in the UK. To ensure the library encompasses a broad range of life experiences captured as true-to-life as possible we are looking for photographers who live within the communities they want to photograph.”

To be eligible, photographers must submit their proposal for meeting the posted briefs around representing UK children and their families. The briefs ask for images of children from ages 0-16, from across the UK’s nations and regions, Black, Asian and Minority-Ethnic families, children with a range of disabilities and using a variety of technology. Shoots must be model released (legal approval from children’s guardians and parents for the images to be captured and hosted on gettyimages.com) and compliant with government guidelines around social distancing.

Applications will be reviewed by the BBC and Getty Images and successful applicants will be chosen based on their ability to execute a compelling commercial visual narrative which meets the selected brief. The seed fund will be open across three phases of briefs, closing 3 December 2020.
