Marking the 150th anniversary of the Royal Albert Hall and 80 years since the venue became home to the festival, the BBC Proms 2021 season heralds a summer of live music on a scale not seen since before the pandemic. TV coverage focuses on key themes across the season: a celebration of UK music talent, showcasing the scope of British creativity in the art form; performances by some of the greatest international soloists and conductors and a spotlight on rising stars on the scene.

Extensive coverage of the world’s largest classical music festival will be available to audiences across BBC Television and Radio this summer. Twenty concerts will be broadcast across BBC One, BBC Two, and BBC Four, and every note is broadcast live on BBC Radio 3.

Signalling the continuing commitment to classical music, BBC Two broadcasts the First and Last Nights live (with the famous second half of the Last Night on BBC One) as well as key events on Saturdays, while audiences can enjoy a regular pattern of Proms concerts on BBC Four, every Thursday, Friday and Sunday through all six weeks of the season.

All Proms content on BBC iPlayer and BBC Sounds will be available for 30 days after the Last Night.

Presenting line up

Making their BBC Proms TV presenting debuts this year are organist and broadcaster Anna Lapwood and Mastermind host and jazz aficionado Clive Myrie. They join a presenting line-up of Proms regulars: Katie Derham, Suzy Klein, Josie d’Arby, Jess Gillam, Tom Service, and Petroc Trelawny.

BBC Radio 1 host Clara Amfo also returns as a Proms presenter.

On BBC Radio 3, the station’s full presenting team appears across the six weeks of live music: Hannah French, Jess Gillam, Penny Gore, Martin Handley, Nicola Heywood Thomas, Georgia Mann, Andrew McGregor, Tom McKinney, Kate Molleson, Petroc Trelawny, Tom Service and Ian Skelly.

TV coverage of the concerts will be enriched by content, giving audiences further insight into the music and the atmosphere in the Royal Albert Hall.

The presenters will be introducing the concerts from various areas of the venue, from the gallery down to the stage.

Discussions with special guests, such as acclaimed performers, artists and music experts, will focus on specific elements in the repertoire of the concerts, highlighting its richness.

Features focusing on upcoming talent will shine a light on the new faces of international classical music, bringing these players to the fore and allowing audiences at home to witness their skills as they are about to make their mark.

Weekly 'hot topic' discussions will explore and respond to questions such as: genius vs madness; the fine line between borrowing and plagiarism; the impact on education if we stop teaching music - and much more.

On BBC Radio 3, special editions of Record Review and In Tune will be Proms-focused, presenting recorded editions of the repertoire played in the concerts and interviews with the artists and guests appearing as part of the season.

Every concert will be broadcast live and on demand on BBC Sounds, and available on the platform for 30 days after the Last Night Of The Proms. Also on BBC Sounds, Proms-themed mixes will be updated throughout the season.
