Ten eager apprentices have started a year of on-the-job training in their desired creative field, thanks to the BBC Academy’s new Apprentice Hub. The Apprentice Hub is a Flexi-Job apprentice agency where the BBC acts as the host employer, arranging placements for aspiring creatives with local businesses.

The first group, who started with an induction on Monday 4 July at the BBC’s base in the Mailbox, will be working in broadcast production, content creation, and digital marketing with a number of top creative businesses across the city.

Businesses that have partnered up with the BBC for the first round of apprenticeships include Full Fat TV, Optomen Television, Electric House, WMCA, Caters News, No Class Creations, and Top Banana.

Sarah Moors, Head of Early Careers and Staff Apprenticeships, at the BBC Academy says: “We are very excited to kick off the Apprentice Hub. This is a great opportunity to find and develop local talent on our doorstep, who can bring a fresh perspective to the creative industry.

“Our team has worked really hard behind the scenes to get to this point, and we are delighted to have secured some brilliant placements with some of the regions’ top creative businesses.

“We have more partners signed up and ready to work with the next cohort of apprentices who will join us in September. Our aim is to place up to 50 apprentices with our partners within our first year of running the hub.”

Lianne Ryan, Head of Business Development at Caters Media Group, says: “Caters Media Group is delighted to be taking part in the BBC Apprenticeship scheme and supporting creatives as they kick-start their careers in the media industry. Not only is this a fantastic opportunity for employers and apprentices alike but I’m hugely excited to see local talent help the West Midlands further develop as the next media powerhouse.”

24-year-old apprentice Chantelle Grant who starts as Broadcast Production Assistant at Optomen TV says: “I am so happy to be here. I have always wanted to work in broadcast and music production so when I found out about this scheme I rushed to apply.

“I’ll be working on the Great British Menu for the first six months – it is a great opportunity to learn on the job. I’m looking forward to learning about videography and sound design, and discovering what it’s like to put a set together. I can’t wait to get stuck in.”

Stuart Thomas, Head of BBC Midlands, says: “The West Midlands is experiencing significant growth in the creative industries which we have been able to support by partnering up with local creative businesses, investing in the region, all while developing new local talent. It’s a win-win for everyone.”

The Apprentice Hub is based in Birmingham and is a part of the BBC’s Across the UK plan. It is the biggest transformation of the BBC in decades; moving power, production, and investment out of London.

Through the plan, the BBC is aiming for 1,000 apprentices in the organisation each year by 2025. Birmingham has been earmarked as a youth hub with Radio 1’s Newsbeat and the Asian Network relocating to the city alongside BBC Three, which already has a base in Birmingham.

Notes to Editors

Flexi-Job Apprenticeship Agencies are a new government initiative which will make apprenticeship schemes more accessible to employers where short term contracts and/or project based work is prevalent.
