BBC One

Waterloo Road is ultimately a real celebration of what it is to be British today, we strive to be a truly entertaining drama that speaks to a broad audience, and we’re thrilled to have the opportunity to bring this iconic brand back to BBC One and iPlayer.

The COVID pandemic can be considered a watershed moment for many; and with a cost of living crisis now in full force; a period of massive social change beckons... where better to see this playout, than in the classrooms of Waterloo Road.

It’s important to state however, that we are not a bleak or worthy show – far from it, we celebrate life, we are big-hearted and, we hope, offer a humorous and entertaining viewing experience. Our show may look issues hard in the face, but we are not judgemental, and would like our viewers to feel seen.

From understanding cultural identity, navigating sexual politics, whilst witnessing history books being rewritten in-front of our very eyes; yet also navigating the age old complexities of hormonal adjustments, first love, discovering who we truly are and understanding the dysfunction of one’s own family. Waterloo Road truly is the perfect playground to unpack many stories... and we’re thrilled to be doing this for an audience in 2023.

The show is remembered for its iconic characters and stories; they are drawn larger than life and are big hearted, quick witted and iconic. We strive to continue this tradition. We want to make our audience gasp, laugh and cry; we want you to be talking about us to your friends, colleagues and teachers the next day. Our writers are telling stories with truth and conviction; this is not cynical TV, this is TV that celebrates life and community and demands attention. Noisy but with a MASSIVE heart. We are Waterloo Road.

About

Waterloo Road is reborn. Meet the new class of 2023, alongside some familiar faces returning to BBC One and iPlayer, bringing with them brand new dramas.

As a new school year begins, a peaceful protest turns into a school riot and the events of the day will have huge ramifications for everyone involved.

Across the term, Waterloo Road’s teachers and parents are going to have to learn on their feet as they try to navigate the ever changing social landscape - from teen homelessness to the cost of living, being LGBTQ+, racism, sexism, mental health and everything else facing young teens today.

Amongst the chaos, the students, faculty and parents still make time for friendships, fun, and a few romances. The pupils have a lot to contend with this term, but they will learn to lean on one another to survive the year and try to stay out of detention as much as possible.

Riots, scandals, fractured families and challenging kids – for Headteacher Kim Campbell (Angela Griffin) and her team, fire-fighting is a way of life. Who said education was easy?

Waterloo Road returns for a new term on Tuesday, January 3 2023.

The highly anticipated first episode will air at 8 pm on BBC One after EastEnders.

The classroom drama will also be repeated on BBC Three on Friday, January 6 at 7 pm.

The new series consists of seven episodes and will be available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
