Alex Jones and Roman Kemp have explained how The One Show is joining forces with the Queen of Cooking, Dame Mary Berry and the Coronation Big Lunch to vote for a Coronation dish that is perfect for celebrations up and down the country.

Five winners from BBC’s MasterChef: The Professionals and Great British Menu have been invited to create one outstanding savoury dish in Their Majesties’ honour.

Dame Mary Berry says: “I’m so excited about this. It’s our search for a Coronation Dish but it will be The One Show viewers who get to choose the ultimate winner. We want a dish that is perfect to share. Whether it’s for your neighbours, community or simply friends and family.”

Over three nights this week, the following dishes will be showcased:

• Coronation Fried Chicken Sandwich – James Cochran, Great British Menu Champion 2018

• King Oyster Mushroom Filo Tart – Claire Lara, MasterChef: The Professionals champion 2010

• Majestic Chicken Pie – Adam Handling, MasterChef: The Professionals Finalist 2013 and Great British Menu Champion 2023

• Coronation Cauliflower Dome – Nikita Pathakji, MasterChef: The Professional’s Champion 2022

• Celebratory Pork and Prawn Dumplings – Dan Lee, MasterChef: The Professional’s Champion 2021

Mary adds: “These chefs are simply inspiring. What a treat I had tasting all these recipes – they are all delicious and achievable – I can’t wait to share them all with you.”

Voting opens on Wednesday, 19 April between 7pm-7.30pm after the final dish has been broadcast, and The One Show viewers will have until 11.59pm on 1 May to vote for their favourite via bbc.co.uk/theoneshow with the winner announced live on 2 May. All recipes will be available online in case you’d like to try them out before you decide which is your favourite.

The Coronation Dish launches as The King and The Queen revealed their own sharing suggestion for Coronation Big Lunches with a Coronation Quiche. Shared via The Royal Family’s social media channels, the recipe is described as a deep quiche with a crisp, light pastry case and delicate flavours of spinach, broad beans and fresh tarragon.

Alex Jones adds: “We wanted to inspire our viewers with some lovely simple recipes and give them a chance to decide which dish they would crown The Coronation Dish and serve alongside the Coronation Quiche as part their Special Coronation Celebrations and Coronation Big Lunches up and down the country.”

The Big Lunch – a central part of the Coronation Weekend – is an idea from the Eden Project which has been encouraging communities to celebrate their connections and get to know each other a little better every year since 2009. Free packs with all the information you need to help get the party started are available at CoronationBigLunch.com.

Following the success of the first Big Jubilee Lunch to celebrate Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee in 2012, The Big Lunch brought the Jubilee celebrations into the heart of every community in 2022 and will continue to bring people together for May’s Coronation Celebrations as the Coronation Big Lunch.

Devised with a budget in mind, The One Show website has links to tips and recipes to help viewers recreate the dishes. This includes options for vegetarians, options for ingredients and options for equipment. Every recipe can be made cheaply and easily.

The Coronation Dish was created and produced by Sidney Street for The One Show.
