Sophie, 29, Solihull

What made you want to take part in Fight School?

I had never done anything like this before and I was up for the challenge.

What was growing up like?

I have been in trouble in the past for fighting. I was 11 when I first got arrested and this has been consistent throughout my life. I wanted to take part in Fight School because I wanted to learn how to channel my anger and emotions into something positive.

You are a single mum. Was it tough leaving your daughter?

Very! It’s the longest I have been away. She is always by my side and leaving my daughter was the hardest part. But my mum and step dad kindly looked after her. I missed her so much and it was hard to be apart from her, I kept telling her that I was going to make her proud.

What was the boxing like?

I didn’t realise how many muscles could hurt at once! Boxing is like a dance. Everything comes into play - from the position you have your toes in, to the stance of your legs and how your midriff is. The fitness side was a struggle but once you got through the barrier, it was okay.

What did this experience teach you about yourself?

In the past, I’ve lived my life for every other person, and I’ve never put myself first. I had a lot of doubt about myself because of how I was treated by others. This experience helped me to find myself as a person. I found out what I am capable of and what I am not. That exercise is great for the mind, it is so powerful, I’ve lost weight too and I want to continue to exercise for life.
