Zeb, 24, North West London

Why did you want to take part in Fight School?

I wanted something new to do and I saw it as an opportunity to take on a new challenge. I liked the idea of learning about discipline and learning about how to push yourself.

Had you boxed before?

I used to do boxing as a little kid and a teenager but I ended up stopping. This was an opportunity for me to get back into it. I considered myself a fit person before doing this as I used to play sports when I was younger too. Some of the training was tough and I found I could run, but the distance side of it was hard! Stepping inside the ring made it different because it is not a place you normally find yourself.

What advice did Idris give you?

That boxing is a tough sport and it’s a one-man sport. He told me he believed in me and that I could do it, which I found a great compliment. When I find myself struggling early in the process, Idris took the time out, he understood and it helped me a lot. It was easy to talk to Idris and he is a good motivator.

What did you learn from joining Fight School?

I learnt lots, especially about discipline and meeting different people from different backgrounds. I learnt I am a strong person and that I can encourage others to reach their goal. It made me realise I am the type of person who will never let anything get me down, no matter what I am going through.

You’ve had a tough upbringing. In the first episode, you talk about your losing your dad and a friend.

It was very hard. I think they would be proud of me for doing this.

What advice would you give to other young people who are looking for a new direction in life?

I would encourage them to do Fight School. It can change you (for the better) and make you a different person. No matter what, it is important to put yourself first in this life. Nobody else is going to do it for you. Even if you have been through a lot and seen stuff some people have never seen before, everyone wants a peaceful life and nobody wants to be looking over their shoulder. You must be strong and not let anything get you down. I would say have faith in yourself and keep on pushing.
