50,000 tickets for BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend Hull 2017 snapped up in under 50 minutes

50,000 free tickets for Radio 1’s Big Weekend in Hull were released at 9.10am this morning during The Radio 1 Breakfast Show, with 95 percent of them going to the local area. 25,000 eagerly anticipated tickets were available for each day of the two-day event, which takes place at Burton Constable Hall on Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 May.

The lucky ticket holders will enjoy performances from the likes of Katy Perry, Little Mix, Kings of Leon, Stormzy and many more - with the full line-up still to be announced.

For this year’s event, more Big Weekend tickets than ever were made available for people living locally. Of the geographically weighted tickets, 70 percent were reserved for residents living within the area covered by Hull City Council and East Riding of Yorkshire Council, 25 percent were reserved for people living in the surrounding areas, defined as those with York (YO) or Doncaster (DN) postcodes but living outside the area covered by the two councils above; and anyone within a Lincoln (LN) postcode. The remaining five percent of tickets were made available to other audiences across the UK.

Tickets were limited to a maximum of two tickets per transaction. Single tickets were available.

Hosted by Radio 1 DJs, Radio 1’s Big Weekend is Europe’s largest free ticketed festival, and will be heading to Hull to coincide with the UK City of Culture celebrations for 2017. Radio 1’s Big Weekend travels to areas that wouldn’t usually host large scale music events of this kind. As well as shining a spotlight on the host city, in the lead-up and via the event’s coverage, Radio 1’s Big Weekend provides a major boost to the local economy. The event is now in its 14th year and will be produced in partnership with Hull 2017.

In the lead-up to Big Weekend, Radio 1 and BBC Learning will produce Radio 1’s Academy, which aims to inspire local 16-19 year-olds to take the next step in creative careers. Radio 1’s Academy includes a series of special events, local engagement and face-to-face activity in the area, beginning in February and culminating in May with a packed week of radio shows, gigs, masterclasses and Q&As. Keep listening to Radio 1 for further details.
