Boost for breakfast shows with increased listeners across BBC radio stations

The BBC Radio 1 Breakfast Show with Nick Grimshaw has attracted 6.16 million listeners

This is its biggest weekly reach in two years and has increased from 5.29 million last quarter and 5.82m last year, according to the latest RAJAR data.

On BBC Radio 2, the Chris Evans Breakfast Show continues to attract huge audiences with 9.43 million listening each week (from 9.35m last quarter and 9.21m last year), the highest reach since 2016.

There have been increases since last quarter across our other network stations too. Radio 4’s Today programme had 7.15million listeners (from 7.06m last quarter and 7.45m last year). Breakfast on Radio 3 had a weekly reach of 607,000 (from 566,000 last quarter and 647,000 last year) and 5 live Breakfast had 2.25 million (from 2.2m last quarter and 2.23m last year).

All BBC Radio’s weekly reach over the period (Q4 18 September 2017 - 17 December 2017) was 35.02 million (34.85m last quarter and 35.2m last year) and a share of 52.8% (52.1% last quarter and 53.5% last year).

BBC Radio 1 posted a reach of 9.84 million listeners (from 9.7m last quarter and 9.56m last year) - which rises to 10.72m when listeners aged 10 and over are included - while the network’s share of listening was 5.9% (from 5.9% last quarter and 5.8% last year). The Radio 1 Breakfast Show With Nick Grimshaw now attracts 5.72 million listeners aged 15+ per week, compared to 4.93m last quarter and 5.37m last year. Including all listeners aged 10+, the show now has a weekly audience of 6.16m.

BBC Radio 2’s weekly audience was 15.49 million (from 15.36m last quarter and 15.05m last year year) while the station’s share of listening was 18.3% (17.5% last quarter and 17.3% last year). Both BBC Radio 1 and BBC Radio 2’s weekly audience is the highest it’s been since 2016.

BBC Radio 3’s audience was 1.95 million (from 1.96m last quarter and 2.12m last year) and its share was 1.1% (1.1% last quarter and 1.4% last year).

BBC Radio 4 posted a weekly reach of 11.25 million during the quarter (11.22m last quarter and 11.33m last year) and a share of 11.8% (11.8% last quarter and 12.7% last year).

BBC Radio 5 live posted a reach of 5.45 million listeners (5.07m last quarter and 5.71m last year) and a share of 3.4% (3.4% last quarter and 3.6% last year).

Amongst digital-only stations, BBC Radio 1Xtra had a reach of 1.06 million weekly listeners across the period (from 1.08m last quarter and 909,000 last year which rises to 1.15m for those aged 10+), BBC Radio 6 Music drew 2.34 million listeners (from 2.43m last quarter and 2.33m last year), BBC Radio 4 Extra attracted 2.26 million listeners per week (from 2.15m last quarter and 2.18m last year), and BBC Radio 5 live sports extra posted 1.06 million listeners (from 1.64m last quarter and 1.17m last year).

BBC Asian Network drew 661,000 listeners, compared to 662,000 listeners last quarter and 632,000 last year.

The BBC World Service posted a weekly UK audience of 1.51 million (from 1.49m last quarter and 1.53m last year).

BBC Local Radio reached 8.3 million listeners per week, from 8.25m last quarter and 8.89m last year.
