From Thursday 9 September, Radio 1’s Residency will move to a new day and time slot (Thursday, 11pm-1am), which will kick off an early weekend on BBC Radio 1 and Radio 1 Dance. The new set-up will also see all DJs performing month-long residencies, mirroring a club-style line up and allowing more talent to come through and grace the airwaves over the course of twelve months.

The line-up for September, October and November 2021 is as follows, with one more DJ yet to be announced for November:

9-30 September: Todd Edwards & Ela Minus

7-28 October: Shygirl & Kampire

4-25 November: India Jordan

Shygirl

Shygirl is a British rapper and multidisciplinary artist who grew out of the East London club scene. November 2020 saw the release of her now widely acclaimed EP ‘ALIAS’ which featured production from long-time collaborator Sega Bodega and the late pop pioneer SOPHIE.

Shygirl says, “I grew up with BBC Radio 1 and never imagined I’d get the opportunity to be welcomed in some way by such a British institution. It’s definitely a moment for me that makes me appreciate what I’m doing and the opportunity to share that with so many people from different walks of life, connecting with people is all I’ve ever wanted to do and there’s no better way than through music.”

Ela Minus

Colombia-born musician Ela Minus writes, performs, produces and records her music independently and as a self-imposed rule, no sound in her work is generated inside a computer. Before forging her path as a solo electronic artist, Ela attended Berklee College of Music, where she double-majored in jazz drumming and synthesizer design, where later she saw a clear connection between the freedom of the DIY scene she grew up in and club culture.

Ela Minus says, “I'm in awe that I get to be a Radio 1 Resident! I've listened to Radio 1 for years, it has been an endless source of musical inspiration for me and hopefully with this residency I now get to inspire others. I can't wait to start!”

Todd Edwards

Todd Edwards is a Grammy award-winning House music legend, with a career spanning over 25 years. In his early career, Todd developed a unique way of sampling which led to him being credited as ‘one of the Godfathers of UK Garage’, working with names such as Wiley, Wilkinson, Jax Jones and many more. In 2021, Todd released ‘The Chant’ which premiered as Annie Mac’s Hottest Record in The World on BBC Radio 1 and received widespread support across the scene.

Todd Edwards says, “I’m honoured to have the opportunity to share my musical knowledge on Radio 1’s Residency. I have a lot planned for my shows, I have a broad taste in music and I will be taking the listeners on a journey through music old and new.”

Kampire

Among East Africa's most exciting DJs and a core member of Kampala's Nyege Nyege collective, Kampire’s vibrant bass-heavy sets have transported her across the world. In 2019 Kampire brought the best of Ugandan party culture to clubs and festivals across every continent bar Antarctica.

Kampire says, “Super excited to be joining the illustrious DJs of the BBC Radio 1 gang, bringing the sounds of the Afro-inspired global underground to listeners. I can't wait to bring East African and other sounds to such a massive and influential platform."

India Jordan

London-based India Jordan is a true disciple of high-energy and high-emotion Dance music. After holding down DJ residencies for the best part of a decade, 2019 saw India take the plunge into releasing their own original music for the first time with an instant impact and in 2020, Pete Tong named India his ‘Breakout Star of the Year’ on his flagship BBC Radio 1 show.

India Jordan says, “I am so excited to be joining a station that I've listened to since being a kid and discovered so many artists through. I'm very grateful for this opportunity to showcase my sound, my style as a DJ and all of the bits in between that influence me as an artist. Can't wait to get started!”

Radio 1 will be announcing brand new residency line-ups every three months.
