BBC Radio 1 has announced Gorgon City, salute, Moxie, Bambii and Sally C and Gideon as the latest DJs to join BBC Radio 1’s Residency.

From June, Radio 1’s Residency will continue on BBC Radio 1 and Radio 1 Dance with a brand new line-up for Summer.

Each month, two DJs will take up a residency, shining a spotlight on the freshest, most influential and emerging sounds in electronic music.

Listeners will be transported into the worlds of the biggest names in Dance music from across the international club scene in the weekly show.

The line-up for the months of June, July and August as follows:
• June - Gorgon City & GIDEÖN
• July - salute & Sally C
• August - Moxie & BAMBII

Gorgon City

Gorgon City are world builders. The duo’s shared moniker and aesthetic draw on the hedonism of the ancient Greeks, but also the period’s extraordinary gamut of discovery, creativity, and ambition.

Gorgon City’s Kye Gibbon and Matt Robson Scott have firmly established themselves as one of the most revered contemporary dance music duos. They have 10 BRIT certified singles including 1x Platinum and 2x Gold, and amassed to date over 10 million singles and 1.5 billion global streams, rewarded for their now distinctly recognisable sound of timeless, often bass driven, house music.

In the past year the pair have sold out shows at Red Rocks Amphitheatre (with a spring 2023 follow up date) LA’s The Shrine, a 16 week Ibiza Amnesia residency, a sold-out Printworks show and released a single and bassline weapon ‘Sidewindah’ featuring celebrated MC Flirta-D. The track shot to number 1 on the official Beatport charts, and was later remixed by garage chart-topper Interplanetary Criminal. The duo have proven their music is equally fitting for soundsystems of both open air arenas and underground raves. 2023 will bring new music, new shows, and exciting collaborations. One thing that will remain the same is Gorgon City's artistic integrity.

Radio still is the most amazing way to discover new music and Radio 1 played that part for us since the beginning. Listening to Fabio & Grooverider as kids in our jungle/dnb days and then our music being championed by Annie Mac, Kissy Sell Out and Pete Tong has all been so inspiring for us. We’re going to use this residency to explore where we came from and where we are going: playing some of the most influential tunes of our career. It’s going to be very special and we can’t wait to get started!”

salute

salute spent the first 18 years of their life in Vienna, Austria, a city known for its clean streets and beautiful architecture. It was in Vienna as a young teen that they first started becoming enamoured with British dance music via the internet and games like FIFA Street. At the age of 18 salute moved to Brighton before settling in Manchester where they are still now based. Experiencing the UK club culture first hand and attending Grime, Garage and Dubstep nights is how salute says they cultivated their unique sound.

Throughout 2018 and 2019 salute released Condition - a dance-focussed mixtape, comprised of neat, chopped up electronics and emotive, garage-style samples. After hitting their stride with some incredible club releases since then, salute made their major label debut with standout tracks and fan favourites 'Joy' and 'Therapy'. Tracks that soundtracked the post pandemic world and can be heard the world over.

salute has now become something of a cult sensation and last year’s standout DJ performer, playing to packed crowds at Field Day, Parklife, Secret Garden Party, Warehouse Project, and an incredible home show at Boiler Room Vienna. An amazing full circle moment that harks back to salute's early days of learning production. At the top of their game and signed to their childhood dream label Ninja Tune to work on records and their debut album, 2023 and beyond is set to be the year salute truly breaks out.

Moxie

As a radio DJ who started out covering for Sinden’s Kiss FM show in 2010, Moxie has gone on to hold down The Residency and was In New DJ’s We Trust slots on BBC Radio 1. She continues to have one of the longest standing residencies on NTS, having hosted her show for over 12 years on the station. Her weekly show is a staple for the latest in underground house, techno and beyond, peppered with her engaging and charismatic radio chat - hosting guests from some of dance music’s leading artistic forces including Jeff Mills, Midland, Four Tet, Honey Dijon and more.

Alongside her illustrious radio and DJ career, Moxie has established herself as a promoter and label founder with On Loop. Started in 2016, the party has rapidly gained momentum, welcoming artists such as Matthew Herbert, Josey Rebelle, Leon Vynehall, K-Hand and Soichi Terada, in venues across Europe and the UK. On Loop has been championed as one of Mixmag’s Top 20 labels and nominated for ‘Best Compilation’ at the DJ Mag awards.

Moxie says: "After 8 years since I last hosted The Residency, I’m really stoked to be joining the team again. BBC Radio 1 have shown me a lot of support over the years and there’s nothing quite like presenting on such a well-respected platform. Radio has been a huge part of my journey right from the beginning, and I wouldn’t be where I am today without it. I can’t wait to return and share the music that I love on the biggest network there is”.

BAMBII

BAMBII is a global club DJ known for her genre jumping sets that push music exploration and the spirit of dance and rave culture everywhere.

She is one of Canada’s most compelling DJs. Whether online or on dancefloors, her political and musical vernacular gives credence to dance music’s ever expanding reach, and the relationships it helps forge between individuals, cultures and spaces. As proof, she has spent the last few years touring Europe and Asia as a solo artist and on support for some of the world’s biggest artists - Mykki Blanco, Kelela, and BbyMutha, to name just a few.

BAMBII is a reoccurring name across iconic European venues like Paris’ Afropunk and Germany’s Open Source Festival. Her event series ‘JERK’ has made stops in Halifax, Los Angeles, New York and Montreal building on the success of the event’s 7th year of existence in hometown Toronto.

BAMBII says: “I’m so excited to have the opportunity to share my musical perspective on what is one of the most relevant music platforms in the world! I’m going to be taking listeners on a journey connecting sounds from the diaspora to the rave and beyond”.

Sally C

Whether via her DJ sets or label Big Saldo’s Chunkers, Sally C has developed one of the most distinctive sound signatures in electronic music. The Belfast-born, Berlin-based artist traverses the gamut of vintage house, hip house, acid and breakbeat, all with that unmistakable Chunker sound.

Moving to Berlin in 2015, she etched out a spot in the city’s thriving club scene, throwing parties at Griessmühle and her own open-air raves, all the while building a fanbase for her raw and chunky style.

A deft selector, Sally can seamlessly lay down an extended DJ set, a peak time festival slot or a winding closer with equal mastery. This adaptive skill has seen her confirm regular bookings at Panorama Bar and Robert Johnson, right through to Printworks, Melt Festival, Love International, Awakenings, Warehouse Project, HE.SHE.THEY and Australia’s leading festival, Pitch Music & Arts. Her profile continues to grow in North America, with recent tours taking in gigs at Piknic Électronik, Elsewhere, and a maiden tour of Mexico.

Up until 2020, Sally had built her name entirely based on her inspired selector skills, but all that changed with the launch of her own independent imprint Big Saldo’s Chunkers. To date original productions such as ‘Let’s Get This’ and ‘Downtown’ (the latter scoring over 30 BBC Radio 1 plays), have established themselves as enduring classics, thanks to Sally’s vision and commitment to crafting tracks that adhere to her three crucial production principles – a chunky bassline, banging drums and a trippy vocal. The highly anticipated Chunkers 003 is on the way for summer 2023.

Sally C says: “Hearing my music being played on the station I grew up listening to for the first time was a moment I’ll never forget, and to now be joining “The Residency” with BBC Radio 1 feels like a huge milestone. I’m honoured to follow in the footsteps of so many great artists and have the opportunity to share my music in a more personal way with the listeners.”

GIDEÖN

GIDEÖN has a background in music spanning 30 years. In addition to his practice as a recording artist, stage designer, and curator, he is a touring DJ and an avid collector of vinyl. He specialises in Northern Soul, Latin, Reggae, Gospel, and Disco rarities. House Music, above all, is his first and greatest love. He has a degree in Music with Visual Practice (BA Hons) and is currently guest Creative Director of Music for London Borough of Culture 2022.

GIDEÖN co-founded, co-created and curates Block9’s festival nightlife institutions at Glastonbury: NYC Downlow, Genosys, Maceo’s, and IICON. He is also resident and co-booker at London’s hottest queer club night Adonis. He’s a resident DJ at The Blessed Madonna’s “We Still Believe” and is regular at Berghain’s Panorama Bar, Lab.oratory, and Garten.

GIDEÖN is founder and label boss at Homo-Centric Records, a label set up to showcase his own productions and to amplify the creative contributions of queer artists working in underground dance music. The label aims to highlight the LGBTQIA+ heritage of House Music and its manifesto states its intent to “re-establish the lines of queer musical tradition at the heart of House Music, lost to AIDS and the recent capitalist desecration of dance music”.

GIDEÖN says: “Radio 1 has soundtracked my entire life as a record collector, producer, curator and DJ. From Chris Goldfinger & Trevor Nelson back in the 90’s to Danny today, I’ve always regarded the station as a yardstick with which you can measure British culture. To now be asked to join The Residency for the month of June is a real honour. I plan to use the opportunity to investigate the history, soul and politics of House, the music to which I have devoted my life”.
