MistaJam to present BBC Radio 1Xtra’s drivetime show

Today, BBC Radio 1Xtra announce that MistaJam will present the station’s drivetime show from Monday to Thursday, 4-7pm. MistaJam will take over from Charlie Sloth from 6 November, on the day Charlie launches his new Radio 1 entertainment show The 8th With Charlie Sloth.

MistaJam joined Radio 1Xtra in 2005 to present an overnight Thursday night show and has quickly risen through the ranks at the station. He currently presents Radio 1Xtra’s evening show from 7-10pm, and earlier in 2017, covered for Annie Mac, hosting her 7-9pm weekday new music show on Radio 1.

In other schedule changes, MistaJam will also host Radio 1’s Dance Anthems, Saturdays from 4-7pm.

MistaJam says: “It's been a privilege over the last 10 years to helm the 7pm show on 1Xtra and in turn give so many artists, many of whom have grown to become some of the biggest artists in the world, their first ever national radio exposure. I'm looking forward to bringing a new energy to daytime radio - getting people home with a smile on their face and a new tune in their playlist.

“Radio 1's Dance Anthems is one of those real iconic international radio brands so it's a massive honour to be chosen as the next caretaker in charge for a new generation!”

Ben Cooper, Controller of Radio 1, 1Xtra and Asian Network says: “1Xtra is on fire - great music, great presenters – and now MistaJam will bring his energy and passion for new music to drivetime. Can’t wait.”

DJ Target will take over the prestigious 7-9pm (Monday to Thursday) new music slot on Radio 1Xtra from 6 November. London born DJ Target has been part of the 1Xtra DJ family for 10 years, breaking new artists through BBC Music Introducing and 1Xtra’s 100% Homegrown. He also covered for MistaJam earlier this year during his time on Annie Mac’s Radio 1 show. DJ Target has been a pivotal figure in UK black music - as an original member of Roll Deep - and has production credits with artists including Wiley, BBK, Dizzee Rascal and Kano.

The new Radio 1 and 1Xtra Saturday night simulcast schedule will see DJ Target, broadcast from 7-9pm, with Charlie Sloth presenting from 9-11pm.

DJ Target says: “To be given the opportunity to showcase the best in brand new music every weeknight on 1Xtra is a dream come true for me. My passion is stronger than ever and I cannot wait to get started in the new slot. That topped with the fact I'll be starting everybody’s Saturday night on both Radio1 and 1Xtra is just incredible. I'm truly honoured.”

Radio 1Xtra also today announce 1Xtra Talks - a new programme within the schedule that will feature elements of Radio 1Xtra Stories, presented by Reece Parkinson, broadcast Sundays from 9-10pm.

1Xtra Talks will tell the stories of young people from across the UK - from women who spend their cash on cosmetic surgery to look like Kim Kardashian, to hard hitting stories from young people who have experienced stigma through growing up in care. Presenter Reece Parkinson, who has previously sat in for Mim Shaikh to present 1Xtra’s Weekend Breakfast Show, will be joined on 1Xtra Talks by different guests each week to discuss these stories and tackle difficult questions about young people and the society they live in.

Reece Parkinson says: “It’s really cool to be offered the show after coming through the ranks as an intern last year. I’m glad to be bringing a new generation of listeners through to 1Xtra.”

1Xtra will be announcing new shows for Friday evening shortly.
