New Podcasts Pieces Of Britney, Nuremberg and Pressed are a hit with listeners on BBC Sounds

New podcasts including Pieces Of Britney, Nuremberg and Pressed proved popular on BBC Sounds between July and September this year, contributing to 347 million plays of all content across radio, podcasts and music this quarter

Woman’s Hour returned to the top 10, while Radio 1 Anthems topped both the most listened to on-demand radio programmes for younger listeners and the highest proportion of listeners under 35
New music mixes Summer Sounds and Happy Hour were among the most played music mixes during the warmer months, with a total of 4.1 million plays for music mixes overall this quarter - up two million from this time last year

The Global News Podcast remains the most listened to on demand radio programme globally on third-party platforms, followed by the Documentary Podcast and In Our Time
The latest data reveals there were a total 155 million plays for on-demand radio and podcasts on BBC Sounds this quarter, with 4.1 million plays for music mixes, up more than two million from this time last year.

The average weekly BBC Sounds audience was 3.6 million across the app, website and voice activated devices, with a peak of 3.8 million.

Remaining steady for this quarter, 54 percent of overall plays on BBC Sounds were for live content and 65 percent of all listening hours on BBC Sounds were live.

Jonathan Wall, Controller of BBC Sounds, says: “This quarter’s big hits are testimony to the huge range of podcasts that people are enjoying on BBC Sounds, across true crime, sport, chat, drama and more. It’s also great to see some of our new titles prove popular so quickly alongside our established podcast hits, and that we helped people soundtrack their summer with music mixes such as The Happy Hour and Summer Sounds.”

On Demand Radi

David Mitchell’s gameshow The Unbelievable Truth, where guests including Frankie Boyle and Ria Lina compete to see how many nuggets of truth they can hide among their lies, was the third most popular on-demand radio programme overall after The Archers and Hercule Poirot The Mystery Of The Blue Train.

With guests including Michaela Coel and Julia Bradbury, Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour appeared in the top 10 most listened to on-demand radio programmes for both all adults and for under 35s. Radio 1’s Anthems remained popular with younger audiences, topping the most listened to on-demand radio programmes for under 35s and the largest proportion of listeners under 35.

Podcasts

The timely new title Pieces Of Britney was one of the most listened to podcasts overall, and by listeners under 35. Hosted by journalist Pandora Sykes, it charted the singer’s extraordinary journey through her early years to the controversial conservatorship, while questioning the media’s treatment of women in the public eye.

Straight talking new podcast Pressed, fronted by influencers Mariam Musa, Nella Rose and Adeola Patronne, launched this quarter with the highest proportion of listeners under 35, as their unfiltered chats proved popular with Gen-Z. New drama Nuremburg also launched this quarter and appeared in the top 10 for listeners under 35, as well as all adults.

Other titles in the top ten include returning favourites You’re Dead To Me, That Peter Crouch Podcast and Bad People appearing to be the listeners choice for a consecutive quarter, along with the new series of Sports Strangest Crimes: Allen Stanford The Man Who Bought Cricket, hosted by Greg James.

Music

Sounds Of The 90s with Fearne Cotton, which featured themed shows such as the Saturday Morning Telly episode, with Philip Schofield, Sarah Green, Andi Peters and Emma Forbes, was the most played music mix this quarter and contributed towards a total of 4.1 million plays for music mixes between July and September, up more than two million from this time last year.

Listeners also turned to expertly curated mixes such as Summer Sounds and Happy Hour to soundtrack the warmer months, with the Pace Setter mix proving popular in the run up to the London Marathon.

BBC podcasts and radio programmes on third party platforms

With a total of 246 million global podcast downloads across the world during this quarter, Global News Podcast (BBC World Service), The Documentary (BBC World Service) and In Our Time (Radio 4) once again proved the most popular.
