This summer Radio 4 will broadcast Proust across ten hours over the three days of the August bank holiday weekend.

From the team behind Radio 4’s ten hour War & Peace special on New Year’s Day special in 2015, this new adaptation features Derek Jacobi as Proust and Simon Russell Beale as Baron de Charlus. The star cast also includes Hattie Morahan, Frances Barber, Robert Glenister, Fenella Woolgar, Emma Mackey (star of Sex Education) and Paterson Joseph.

In Search Of Lost Time is one of the greatest and most memorable reading experiences in any language. In his masterpiece Proust offers both a panorama of Parisian life at a time of immense upheaval - with the aristocracy ceding power to the newly-rich middle class - and an intimate study of a man as he moves from a privileged childhood to a disillusioned middle age.

Listeners can either hear all nine episodes across the schedule over three days, or enjoy a complete box set on BBC Sounds available from the afternoon of Saturday 24 August.

Radio 4 Commissioning Editor for Drama and Fiction, Alison Hindell, says: “What better occasion to make time for a Proustian madeleine moment than a leisurely summer bank holiday? Enlisting fine actors in Derek Jacobi, Simon Russell Beale and their fellow talented cast - in a lovingly crafted adaptation by Timberlake Wertenbaker - Radio 4 listeners are in for a treat.”

Simon Russell Beale says: “It’s thrilling to be able to play one of the great characters from historical fiction.”
