As part of its commitment to live programming, Radio 4 has commissioned a new debate series from the team behind the BBC’s flagship radio news programme, Today.

The series follows the success of Ukraine: Where’s The Line?, presented by Mishal Husain, where the panel discussed what it would take for NATO to confront Russia directly over Ukraine.

Joined by expert guests in front of a live audience, The Today Debate will tackle topics in timely, reactive discussions.

Mishal Husain, Today programme presenter, says: “When you’re as immersed in the headlines from one day to the next as we are, it can be hard to carve out the space to stand back and explore broader questions, but that’s what the debates will allow us to do. And I do hope people will enjoy the opportunity to join us in person.”

Mohit Bakaya, BBC’s Director of Speech, says: “We’re finding more ways on Radio 4 to open up discussion and analysis about the big issues. Programmes like Rethink, AntiSocial and now this live Today Debate aim to illuminate the detail of what is happening in the world, and provide the depth, context and perspective so vital to our common understanding. I can’t think of anyone better than Mishal to steer these debates with her customary rigour and insight.”

The Today Debate is a new series presented by Mishal Husain. It is a BBC News Long Form Audio production for BBC Radio 4. The producer is Louisa Lewis. The editor is Owenna Griffiths.

The first episode, The Today Debate: Turning The Economy Around, will be broadcast on BBC Radio 4 on Tuesday 26 July at 8pm and be available on BBC Sounds.
