The Undertones at BBC Perform Special Radio Ulster Gig As Part of 40th Birthday Celebrations

As part of their 40th birthday celebrations, The Undertones will be performing a special hour-long concert on BBC Radio Ulster recorded in front of a capacity audience at the BBC's Blackstaff Studios in Belfast.

The band will be playing tracks from their debut LP, including hits such as Jimmy Jimmy, Here Comes The Summer and Teenage Kicks, and talking to Stephen McCauley about the stories behind the songs and their early days together in Londonderry and beyond.

The band will be talking about how it all began; how the O’Neill’s house became band HQ, revealing just what it was like to be the only punk band in the city; and writing the iconic Teenage Kicks.

Presenter Stephen McCauley says: "The Undertones’ songs are timeless and will last forever, and we will still be jumping around and doing strange dances to Jimmy Jimmy and Teenage Kicks. I love these songs and have grown up with them all my life, but it’s great to go back and marvel at just how good they really are. I think we take them for granted, but they are incredible musicians, as well as songwriters, and when they perform live, it electrifies the room. I want to get back and find out more by talking to them about the first LP and hopefully give listeners an insight as to what makes this band so special.”

The Undertones At The BBC will be broadcast on BBC Radio Ulster/Foyle on Monday 30 May at 3pm.

BBC Radio Ulster is available via 92-95FM and DAB digital radio, digital TV and online at bbc.co.uk/radioulster
