In the summer of 1982, two seemingly random killings that shocked the nation occurred within the space of days and sparked Ireland’s biggest manhunt. The smartly-dressed assailant, Malcolm MacArthur, was eventually found hiding in the home of the Attorney General. His trial lasted seven minutes, further adding to a growing sense of suspicion in Ireland.

After spending 30 years behind bars, MacArthur is now spotted on the streets of Dublin since his release ten years ago. But mystery still shrouds the incident – who exactly is Malcolm MacArthur and why was the suspected killer found hiding in the Attorney General’s home?

Featuring contributions from award-winning Irish novelist Colm Toibin (Brooklyn), The Irish Times’ Fintan O’Toole, and veteran broadcaster Olivia O’Leary, Obscene: The Dublin Scandal revisits the political fallout that ensued and tackles the many unanswered questions surrounding this case.

Adrian Dunbar says: “The so called GUBU affair was a watershed moment in Irish life. Prior to doing this podcast I had really only known of how it had changed people's perception of politics and those at the top. The story of Malcolm MacArthur and how the Irish police on a murder hunt tracked him to the Attorney General’s home is truly bizarre and still has the power to shock many years later. It was a real pleasure piecing together along with the wonderful contributions this uniquely dark and unbelievable story.”

Obscene: The Dublin Scandal is available on BBC Sounds as a box set from 28 September.

Dublin Scandal is a BBC Studios Podcast production for BBC Radio 5 Live and BBC Sounds.
