At a session for Edinburgh TV Festival today, BBC Three Controller Fiona Campbell spoke about new titles that will coming to BBC Three.

Also announced is an incredibly personal film from Joey Essex who will embark on a journey where he attempts to come to terms with the impact his mother’s death had on him and his identity. At the age of 10, his world was ripped apart when his mum tragically took her own life and with no way of coming to terms with what had happened, Joey never processed this devastating childhood event. He realises that it's now time to confront his trauma and move forward with his life.

Meet The Khans: Big In Bolton (w/t) takes is into the world of Olympic medallist and boxing World Champion Amir Khan and his fashion and beauty influencer wife, Faryal Makhdoom. Its an access areas look into the dynamics of this young couple in Amir’s beloved Bolton as they juggle a young family, their relationship and career pressures under the glare of modern media.

Campbell also spoke about the six-part documentary with Cara Delevingne, Planet Sex (w/t), that was announced yesterday. The series explores the biggest questions in human sexuality. Why are some of us straight and some of us not? Is there even such a thing as straight? Are gender and sexuality independent or intertwined? Why do our sexual tastes vary from person to person and culture to culture? The series will explore and address key questions related to our gender, our sexual orientation, our relationships, the popularity of porn, and more.

Fiona Campbell, Controller, BBC Three, says: “It’s been an incredibly testing year for everyone but we hope that with programmes like This Country, Normal People, Glow Up, Young Offenders or Angels Of The North that BBC Three has offered some respite and an escape from it all. These new commissions represent a good cross section of where we’re going to next alongside our big returners like The Rap Game and RuPaul’s Drag Race. The Joey Essex film and Meet the Khans features figures that have had to struggle for success and are aspirational stories whereas Dance Crush is entertaining escapist content and Planet Sex is centred on themes and questions that are so important to our audience. There is huge creative potential at BBC Three and there's more to come from us in the coming months.”

Joey Essex: Who Am I?

We all think we know Joey Essex. He’s the tabloid favourite and reality TV king who came from nothing to build a highly successful career entertaining the nation. But the picture-perfect exterior hides an inner turmoil.

At the age of 10, Joey's world was ripped apart when his mum tragically took her own life. With no way of coming to terms with what had happened, Joey never processed this devastating childhood event. Instead, like so many kids affected by sudden trauma, he learnt to hide his true feelings behind a series of 'masks' - the joker, the charmer, and as he got older, the reality TV heart throb.

On the outside everything was ‘reem’, but Joey's found it increasingly difficult to drop the act and truly be himself. He realises that it's now time to confront his trauma and move forward with his life.

In this 1x60' documentary for BBC Three, with the help of a clinical psychologist, Joey will embark on a personal journey to attempt to come to terms with the impact his mother’s death had on him and his identity. In a world full of the pressures of social media, and the desperation to be consistently ‘perfect’, can he even live his life authentically, without hiding behind a mask? After twenty years of living this way, who is the ‘real’ Joey Essex?

Joey says: “This documentary is really close to my heart. Going on this journey to find the real me will be a personal challenge, but I hope it also highlights how important it is that other people who have experienced trauma know they’re not alone. I am looking forward to showing people who I really am.”

Joey Essex: Who Am I?, a 1x60’ for BBC Three, was commissioned by Fiona Campbell, Controller, BBC Three and Catherine Catton, Head of Commissioning, Popular Factual and Factual Entertainment. It is produced by Objective Media Group production company betty, part of All3Media. The Executive Producers are Pamela Gordon and Daniella Berendsen, and Producer/Director is Niamh Kennedy. The Commissioning Editor is Ricky Cooper.
