Narrated by Armagh actor Colin Morgan, The Chronicles Of Belfast is the fifth instalment in the Chronicles series, and follows last years The Chronicles of Strangford. The documentary takes a look at the wilder side of Belfast and charts the passing of the seasons, through the eyes of the people who live and work in an increasingly diverse city.

In the first programme, local conservation volunteer Aaron is carrying out an early morning wildlife survey on Black Mountain, where to his delight he hears a cuckoo for the first time – a sign that Spring has arrived. At Minnowburn allotments, harpist Eileen shares how she has found peace in the natural space and quiet that the allotments afford, while Tofik, who fled Ethiopia five years ago, is living in Belfast while he applies for refugee status, and hopes to call it home soon.

Across the series we meet Wiehong, who is preparing her Chinese dance class for Belfast Mela. Teaching traditional dance has helped Wiehong come to terms with the death of her husband, who died from cancer three years ago. In the city centre, artist Wee Nuls attempts to add some colour to Belfast’s streets. With the sounds of the annual Pride festival close by, she celebrates the city’s LGBTQ+ community.

As summer visitors leave RSPB NI’s nature reserve in Belfast harbour, warden Maureen is preparing for the arrival of Konik ponies, who will stay on the reserve all winter grazing the undergrowth. At Victoria Shopping Centre, bee keeper David is preparing hives of native black bees for winter, with his every move watched closely by passing shoppers.

Despite the challenges of the cold wet weather, there is a lot going on in the wilder parts of the city as winter approaches. Increased rainfall brings fossils down from the hills and in Colin Glen, Alannah and Paul search the river finding signs of life over 180 million years old.

The Chronicles Of Belfast is made by Waddell Media and starts on BBC One Northern Ireland on Monday 30 January, 8pm. The full series will also be available on BBC iPlayer.
