BMG’s Los Angeles-based International Writer Services team recently hosted the inaugural Female-Driven SoundLab to create music for a wide span of genres.

It was the first major event hosted by BMG since the start of COVID-19, and the first in-person SoundLab since 2020.

Over the course of five days (June 21-25), twenty-two women including producers, songwriters, and engineers, came together at Sound Factory in Hollywood, California to write for female-centric pop, country, alternative, and Latin-pop artist-focused briefs.

Participants from the BMG roster included acclaimed country music singer and songwriter Lindsay Ell, emerging songwriter KORDELYA, multi-Platinum Latin songwriter Erika Ender, the Domino Saints’ Gigi Ojeda, “La Mamá del Rap” MelyMel, indie pop singer-songwriter Nikki Flores, CCMA-nominee Kat Higgins, pop/rock/electronic singer songwriter Dani Poppitt, LA-based singer-songwriter-producer Sophie Hintze, and hit songwriter Kaydence.

Award-winning, multi-Platinum, Latin singer-songwriter, performer, and producer, Erika Ender said, “This week has been an amazing one… lots of girl power! Loved it and enjoyed it so much, I totally think women can really make MAGIC together. This week was proof of that. For more opportunities of sharing instead of competing…of being stronger by uniting and making history in music. Shout out to BMG for this amazing initiative.”

Ender signed a global multimedia partnership deal with BMG in early 2020.

Each day was dedicated to a specific female-artist and their briefs, where some artists including Lindsay Ell opted to participate in the writing process in person and others including Bebe Rexha first joined virtually via Zoom and later came by the SoudLab to meet the participants and provide feedback.

BMG recording artist Lindsay Ell said, “It is so inspiring being around female energy in a studio environment, as a creator, it’s challenging sometimes to be connected to other women who do what we do, but it makes such a huge difference in the creation process. The BMG Female-Driven SoundLab was such an incredibly unique experience to work with ONLY women. I’m leaving this camp feeling more inspired and connected to who I am. I cannot wait to do this again.”

Claire Bernardin, SoundLab organizer and BMG Creative Coordinator based in Los Angeles, said, “The best part of all of this has been seeing the camaraderie between all the participants. We aim to focus our efforts on looking at things from the artist and songwriter’s perspective and goal was to pair writers together who typically wouldn’t have worked together otherwise. Now, even after the SoundLab has ended, they’re all supporting one another as creators and artists.”
