Magic Radio has partnered with Netflix to launch a special pop-up radio station that will play the greatest Eurovision hits from the past 63 years in anticipation of the streaming service’s new film Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga. The station, titled Magic Eurosong, is now live to generate excitement and awareness for the upcoming film and encourage audiences to watch it when it is released on Friday. It marks Magic Radio’s next big step in its digital innovation plans with the creation of its fifth branded pop-up station.

The partnership comes as both radio and Netflix’s consumption figures have increased during the pandemic, as audiences staying at home are turning to both mediums for entertainment and companionship. The Magic Network saw a 19% rise in daily average reach in the week of 8th-14th June compared to before lockdown, with stations Magic Soul and Mellow Magic seeing particularly strong figures with 31% and 22% increases respectively. By adapting quickly, editing content so it was more relatable and introducing new digital moments like Magic Book Club’s #Shelfisolation and a Robbie Live At Home and Kylie Watch Party, the network has been able to continue to engage with its loyal audience both on air and online.

In addition to playing the most popular tracks from the annual song contest, the station will air exclusive interviews from a variety of past competitors and test superfans on their knowledge. Magic Eurosong will also take over Magic at the Musicals’ social pages for two weeks, allowing Netflix to directly communicate with Magic’s large devoted online listener base.

Commenting on the partnership, Tony Moorey, Group Content Director, Magic Radio, said: “Similar to Netflix, at Magic Radio we are always looking to ensure we produce new, relatable and interesting content for our audiences – whether that’s bringing people together through quizzes, hosting live events or introducing new stations around our listeners’ passions, such as Magic Soul and Magic at the Musicals. Magic Eurosong was the perfect next step; we know that Eurovision is a yearly highlight for our listeners and audiences are looking for more joyful, entertaining and nostalgic content during this time.”

Simon Kilby, Chief Revenue Officer Bauer Media, added: “Both radio and home entertainment have proved resilient and a source of hope and escapism for many during lockdown, and this partnership with Netflix further builds on that. Our previous pop-up stations have all been successful in drawing in and engaging with listeners, so we’re excited to be launching another to deliver the unique content our listeners want and help Netflix promote the film as must-watch this weekend.”

Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga follows Icelandic singers Lars Erickssong and Sigrit Ericksdottir as they are given the chance to represent their country at the Eurovision Song Contest. Starring Will Ferrell, Rachel McAdams, Pierce Brosnan, Dan Stevens and Demi Lovato, the film is available on Netflix on Friday 26th June.

Magic Eurosong will be available until 5th July. Audiences can listen live on magic.co.uk/eurosong and on the Magic Radio App.
