Plus, a partnership with Dove on campaign to support the end of race-based hair discrimination

Bauer Media UK’s fortnightly fashion and news brand, Grazia, today unveils six Beauty Issue covers, the first to be cast exclusively via social media.

The six unique covers feature women who submitted a picture and caption about what beauty means to them in 2020 through Grazia UK’s official Instagram page, using the hashtag #Graziaownyourbeauty.

Keziah Doudy-Yepmo, 22, a law student, Maria Tran, 27, a freelance production-assistant, Jemma Yoloye, 40, a Customer Services Associate and Freelance DJ, Kelly Knox, 36, a Disability Activist, Tsehai Mimi Habtemariam, 30s, a store manager and Ramla Ossoble, 21, a University student all took part in a socially distanced photo shoot for the issue which goes on sale on Tuesday 17 November.

Beauty and health director Joely Walker hosted a panel of industry experts and beauty positivity advocates, whose mission was to read the hundreds of captions submitted and invite six of the women to a socially-distanced cover shoot enabling them to tell their story through the pages of Grazia. On the panel were award-winning hairstylist and founder of her namesake brand Charlotte Mensah, model, writer and founder of Squish Beauty Charli Howard, and make-up artist and co- founder of A.D.C Beauty, Adam De Cruz.

Joely commented: “We chose these six exceptional women from over 100 entries as their stories of self-love and owning their individual beauty really resonated with us.”

The content and themes of Grazia’s Beauty Issue provided Dove with the perfect platform to support their mission to make a positive experience of beauty universally accessible to every woman. Dove is working with Grazia to support Zina Alfa and Emma Dabiri’s petition which aim to end hair discrimination by making it illegal under the UK Equalities Act

Within the issue, journalist Ava Welsing-Kitcher interviews Zina about her journey of self-love and the struggles they have both experienced with their hair growing up and still to this day.

Grazia will also be holding a live IGTV session with Emma Dabiri to encourage audiences to sign the petition.

Nikki Comiskey Marketing Manager Dove UKI said: “At Dove, we believe beauty should be a source of confidence not anxiety, which is why we are supporting Zina and Emma in encouraging people to take action to end discrimination against Black hair by signing this petition calling for hair discrimination to be made illegal in the UK under the UK Equalities Act.”

Other beauty advertisers include Armani New Era, Kerastase, Prada, Boots, Olay, Nexxus and Nivea.

This issue of Grazia also sees the publication of the results of a recent survey investigating how our consumers’ attitudes to beauty have changed during the pandemic. It found that 53% are spending more time on their skincare routine compared to pre-pandemic and two thirds are wearing make-up less frequently. Meanwhile, 35% also admitted to DIY hair dye jobs during lockdown.
