Netflix smash Bridgerton scoops Best New Drama

Corrie does the treble! Coronation Street wins Best Soap, Best Soap Actress and Best Soap Actor

Seven in a row for Call the Midwife plus wins for This Morning, The Great British Bake Off and Gogglebox

Line Of Duty has triumphed at this year’s TV Choice Awards, picking up three of the reader-voted awards.

Jed Mercurio’s BBC1 drama about the police’s anti-corruption unit AC-12 won Best Drama Series while the show’s stars Martin Compston and Vicky McClure have also won their respective acting categories for the first time.

The critically acclaimed series, which picked up a win for Best Drama in 2019, kept 12.8 million of us glued to our screens for the big reveal of ‘H’, making it the UK’s most-watched drama series of the century so far.

The show’s creator Jed Mercurio commented, “Everyone involved in Line Of Duty is absolutely thrilled to be recognised in this way by the viewers and readers of TVChoice, it means an enormous amount to us and we couldn’t be more grateful.”

He continued, “It wouldn’t be the show it is without the amazing performances of Vicky, Martin, Adrian and our brilliant guest leads including Kelly Macdonald for season 6 and all the other brilliant guest leads we’ve had. They’re the guys who actually do it on camera so it’s definitely a tribute to them. “

The year’s winners were announced online at awards.tvchoicemagazine.co.uk during a virtual awards ceremony, hosted by comedian Rob Beckett.

Bridgerton has been voted Best New Drama. Netflix’s answer to Downton Abbey proved to be a huge hit with viewers and the streaming giant confirmed three further instalments had been commissioned. The racy Regency drama is their biggest series ever – with a record 82 million households tuning in to see Lady Whistledown revealed.

It’s seven wins in a row – and eight in total - for Call The Midwife which tops the Best Family Drama category once again. The popular period drama about the nuns and midwives of Poplar’s Nonnatus House continues to delight viewers.

Coronation Street, which celebrated its 60th anniversary in December, celebrates a second hat trick in a row! ITV’s long-running series also scored the same clean sweep last year with Best Soap and both acting gongs. David Neilson who first stepped foot on the famous Coronation Street cobbles as Roy Cropper in 1995 is voted Best Soap Actor while Sally Carman’s powerhouse performance as grieving mum Abi Franklin has earned the actress her first Best Soap Actress TV Choice award.

It’s an incredible 16th Best Reality Show win for ITV’s I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! which had to get creative when COVID-19 hit. Instead of the heat of the Australian jungle, camp-mates bedded down in Gwrych Castle in north Wales, with author and actress Giovanna Fletcher beating Radio 1’s Jordan North to be crowned Queen of the Castle.

Gogglebox wins Best Entertainment Show, in association with Greatest Hits Radio, marking the fourth time that Channel 4 have scooped this gong, and they’ve beaten multi-award winners Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway.

TVChoice readers are huge fans of This Morning, which picks up its eighth Best Daytime Show award. ITV’s daytime stalwart - predominantly fronted by Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield – has once again beaten its rivals which, this time, are The Chase, Loose Women and Pointless/Pointless Celebrities.

The Great British Bake Off/Bake Off: The Professionals/The Great British Bake Off For Stand Up To Cancer wins Best Talent Show. Matt Lucas took over from Sandi Toksvig to co-host alongside Noel Fielding on the Channel 4 show, with judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith returning to the tent - and the health crisis saw cast and crew on the main show living in a ‘self-contained biosphere bubble’ to complete filming.

It’s a first win for James Martin and his ITV show in which he’s joined by celebrity guests, as he provides food inspiration and handy hints for viewers. James Martin’s Saturday Morning wins the Best Food Show category. The chef has hosted his own series since 2017 after leaving Saturday Kitchen, also shortlisted in this category.

Best Comedy goes to The Vicar Of Dibley In Lockdown. Geraldine Granger (Dawn French) first burst onto our screens in 1994 and returned to BBC1 with a mini-trilogy mainly consisting of monologues to her congregation during the pandemic. It was dedicated in memory of late cast members Liz Smith, John Bluthal, Emma Chambers and Roger Lloyd-Pack.

Long Lost Family wins Best Lifestyle Show, a first for the emotional, but uplifting series hosted by Davina McCall and Nicky Campbell, in which people hope to be reunited with their relatives and man’s best friend wins again as the Best Factual Show trophy returns to Paul O’Grady: For The Love Of Dogs for a fourth time.
