Journalist, presenter and jazz lover Clive Myrie to host a ten-part series of short features across both networks

The series has been created to celebrate 30 years of the EFG London Jazz Festival

‘Clive Myrie’s 10 Essential Jazz Albums’ will be heard on both networks from Friday 11th November until Sunday 20th November

Jazz FM and BBC Radio 3 are once again breaking new ground with a joint broadcast collaboration to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the EFG London Jazz Festival, via a series of 10 short features fronted by broadcaster Clive Myrie.

In the series – to be broadcast daily on both networks from Friday 11th to Sunday 20th November – Journalist and Mastermind host Clive will present “Clive Myrie’s 10 Essential Jazz Albums” in which he will play a piece of music from each of the albums he believes should be in every jazz lover’s collection.

The series – commissioned by Nick Pitts for Jazz FM and Janet Tuppen at BBC Radio 3 – came from an idea of both networks wanting to work with the super-busy Clive and his passion for jazz music. Clive has previously hosted some of the jazz themed BBC Proms as broadcast on BBC TV, the landmark ten-part series ‘The Definitive History of Jazz in Britain’ for Jazz FM in 2020, and most recently ‘The Truth About Jazz’ on BBC World Service.

In ‘Clive Myrie’s 10 Essential Jazz Albums’, he will feature recordings from Pharoah Sanders, Della Reese and Nubya Garcia along with many others. It will broadcast nightly on Jazz FM at 1850 and on BBC Radio 3 on weekdays on In Tune at 1820 and on Weekend Breakfast at 0840, from 11-20th November.

Of the series, host and curator Clive Myrie said “Two of my favourite radio stations and ten of my favourite jazz albums! What’s not to like? It’s wonderful to be part of this brilliant collaboration between Radio 3 and Jazz FM. It was a privilege to be asked to work on this series. I won’t lie, it wasn’t easy whittling down my jazz collection and a lifetime of jazz listening to just 10 albums, and 10 tracks. I hope everyone enjoys the selection though I’m sure there’ll be fierce debate about the final choice.”

BBC Radio 3 Controller Alan Davey said “At Radio 3 we are fans of all kinds of music and we love working with colleagues in the music industry to make sure audiences have access to the most carefully curated, exciting, and stimulating output across a variety of genres. We are therefore delighted to partner once again with those brilliant, lovely people at Jazz FM for this year’s EFG London Jazz Festival, to present jazz chosen by none other than Clive Myrie. Clive is a friend of Radio 3, a regular Proms TV presenter, and a music lover. I look forward to listening to his jazz choices on our airwaves and on those of our friends and partners at Jazz FM.”

Nick Pitts, Content Director of Jazz FM and Scala Radio added “This is a unique partnership that is built on years of respect, and the chance to work in collaboration with our friends Alan, Janet and all at Radio 3 – and of course Clive again – is always welcome. This innovative series of shorts is an example of a simple but incredibly effective piece of programming that all jazz lovers will enjoy, plus it gives Clive a chance to remind people of his unbridled knowledge of jazz, wherever they listen. ”

Also, as part of the two radio stations output based around the EFG London Jazz Festival, Radio 3 will broadcast ‘Jazz All Night’, a six-hour celebration of jazz from 1am on Saturday 12th November.

‘Jazz All Night’ will feature specially-commissioned artist-curated mixtapes from the likes of Courtney Pine and Jamz Supernova, alongside a 30-minute special edition of Jazz FM’s Lost Tapes series featuring three previously unheard interviews from the archive, from the 1950’s to the 1970’s, with Art Blakey, Oscar Peterson and Sarah Vaughan.
