Blue Peter has launched a costume design competition with Glastonbury Festival for a unique, money-can’t-buy prize for the winner.

The programme is asking its viewers, aged 6 to 15, to design an outstanding, original eco-costume for Glastonbury Festival’s Kidzfield Sunday Parade on 26 June. In keeping with Glastonbury’s ecologically thoughtful approach, the costume must be made completely from recycled materials – though not plastic bottles as they are not allowed at the festival – and be suitable to be worn in all weathers.

The young designer will win a special once-in-a-lifetime Glastonbury Festival experience, with the opportunity to attend the UK’s biggest music festival, see their design produced and watch the parade, and get a unique chance to go behind the scenes with the BBC Studios Production team.

Glastonbury Festival co-organiser and competition judge, Emily Eavis said: “The Kidzfield really is a special part of Glastonbury: it's a magical place for kids to explore, create and have fun, and it's where my children always want to spend their time! We're so pleased to be teaming up with Blue Peter for this competition. I can’t wait to see what fantastic designs the Blue Peter viewers come up with!”

Sigrid, the BBC Music Sound of 2018 winner, returns to Glastonbury this year after being a huge hit at the festival in 2019 and who will be appearing in a forthcoming episode of Blue Peter, said: "I love Glastonbury, it's maybe the best festival in the world, it's special, there's nothing like Glastonbury, so enter the competition with Blue Peter!"

Blue Peter presenter, Mwaksy said: “I’m so excited to go to Glastonbury Festival with our competition winner! This really is an awesome opportunity to see your design produced and lead the Kidzfield parade, as well as the chance of an incredible behind-the-scenes festival experience. So, get creative and get those designs into us by the 29th of April at 5pm, I’m so looking forward to seeing your fabulous ideas!”

Kidzfield is the family community at the heart of Glastonbury Festival, Competition Judge, Tony Cordy, who has run the field for more than 40 years, said: “It’s where magic lives, amazing things happen, and young minds can be free to explore, experiment and express. Rain or shine, the parade takes place on the Sunday of Glastonbury each year”.

The competition closes on Friday 29th April at 5pm and is open to UK residents aged between 6 and 15 years of age on Friday 29th April 2022. Design entries should be uploaded to the Blue Peter website at www.bbc.co.uk/bluepeter The winner will be announced on Blue Peter in June. Ten designs from each of the three age categories (6-8, 9-11, 12-15) will go through to the second round, with three finalists – one from each category – vying for the top prize. All 30 will receive an Orange Blue Peter badge, with the three finalists also receiving a framed copy of their design. Competition rules and privacy notice can be found on the Blue Peter website.

The Glastonbury competition continues Blue Peter’s longstanding tradition of offering young viewers an inspiring and money can’t buy experience. Recent examples include a creative writing competition, where the winner, Delphine’s work featured in a unique animated film at COP26, Delphine said: “Winning the competition gave me the opportunity to speak up to world leaders about climate change. I met some really amazing people.” Alex, who won Blue Peter’s Supercar of the Future Competition said, “I got to drive around the Top Gear test track with the Stig in a McLaren supercar. It made me feel incredible”. Jessica, who won Blue Peter’s Royal Garden Competition said: “Winning a Blue Peter competition gave me the opportunity to meet the Duchess of Cambridge which was an amazing opportunity. It made me realise that you can do anything you put your mind to.”
