Chili and the Whalekillers: 'Our latest album 'Turn' is our most varied yet'

Chili and the Whalekillers' sound is hard to define. Their PR blurb says they are "Indie Pop, Folk, Pop Rock, Surf and even Dream Pop - all coloured by retro sounding 60's pyschedelia".

Pressparty caught up with the Vienna based act following the release of third album 'Turn' in May to find out more about their music, influences and future.

For those who haven't heard your music, how would you describe your sound?

"We have a hard time describing our sound because the only thing you can count on is that it changes from record to record. We started of with balkan and folk influenced music which evolved into a more political rock'n'roll sound on the second one, 'The Banker on the Run'.

"Our latest album 'Turn' is our most varied record yet - on the whole you could call it alternative pop. But who knows what comes next, progressive-surf-metal?"

How would you sum up your live show in three words?

"Sweaty, interactive and basically just joyful."

Your third album 'Turn' came out in the UK earlier this month. Is it your best yet?

"Our records are like our kids, we can't choose between them and still play songs from all of them at live shows. Even though some time has passed since recording our first album and even though craft has evolved a lot, we still think it's great."

What musical influences run through the record?

"We're very inspired by each other since everyone is active in the creative process, each individual brings something of his own and his own personal influences to the table, which makes it difficult to pin down what musical elements come from where."

Where did the name Chili and the Whalekillers come from?

"We lost a bet but no regrets!"

They say there's a time and a place for everything. So what's the best time and place to listen to Chili and the Whalekillers?

"At our live gigs, definitely! But the records are great too - try listening to 'Turn' while proposing to someone (That really happened!) or while on the bus, 'The Banker on the Run“ after losing your house to the financial crises and 'The Tragic Tale of Julie' and the 'Crying Clown' when drinking.

What does the rest of 2015 hold for the band?

"When we're finished with the current tour through the UK we will be returning to the studio to finish up some new material which is due to be released this winter. We are really excited to see how all the playing and the experiencing of new impressions, people and places influence our creative process.

"There will definitely be some more touring following that release and we hope to return to the UK soon!"
